♻Sustainable Agriculture: PepsiCo has closed on a $1.25 billion 10-year green bond that the company will use toward decarbonization of its operations, plastic waste reduction, regenerative agriculture, and pursuing net-positive water impact. Overall, PepsiCo says it will use an amount equivalent to the net proceeds from the bond to fund eligible green projects with a focus on its pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) sustainability agenda. ♻Sustainable Digital Transformation: The Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability (CODES) launched an action plan that outlines three systemic shifts needed to leverage the power of digitalization to help create more sustainable and equitable societies and business models. It includes a set of nine “Impact Initiatives” designed to “spark immediate collective action and multi-stakeholder collaboration.” The three systemic shifts identified in the ‘Action Plan for a Sustainable Planet in the Digital Age’ are the result of a 12-month consultation and co-creation process involving CODES stakeholders. ♻Sustainable Delivery: Seattle: Amazon and Rivian are rolling out thousands of custom electric delivery vehicles to more than 100 cities, including Seattle, by the end of 2022 with plans to expand to 100,000 cities in the U.S. by 2030. Amazon customers in Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and St. Louis, among other cities, will start seeing the delivery vehicles beginning this week. ♻Sustainable Packaging: Coca-Cola Co. announced that it is retiring Sprite’s iconic green bottle and replacing it with a more sustainable, clear one. In a news release, the company announced the shift from the signature green color to the clear bottle will begin Monday. The new bottles will use clear polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a strong, light plastic that is 100 percent recyclable. ♻Energy Consumption: For Samsung Electronics America, Aramark provides food and facilities management services at 43 locations in 19 states, serving more than 4,000 Samsung employees. Recently, Samsung received recognition for their environmental sustainability efforts in the U.S., and took the time to highlight Aramark and their shared efforts in the areas of energy efficiency and food sustainability as part of Samsung’s “Partners in Sustainability” series. ♻Local Business: Three businesses in Evergreen are setting the “green” standard for sustainability through their enrollment in the Green BizTracker program. The Colorado Green Business Network launched the GreenBiz Tracker in early 2022, which is a rebrand of its former “Environmental Leadership Program.” Evergreen Sustainability Alliance has teamed up with CGBN to help local businesses enroll in the tracker and provide localized support. ♻Smart Citizen: Smart cities utilize information and communication technology to improve operational efficiency, share information with the public and provide a better quality of government service and citizen welfare. The market is majorly driven by the growing need for public safety and communication infrastructure. ♻Global Markets: New York: Stock funds outperformed across global markets over the last five years if they were weighted toward companies with positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) scores, research from sustainability data firm ESG Book shared exclusively with Reuters this month showed. ESG Book's analysis of model portfolios containing 60 to 85 stocks on average showed performance varied widely by individual ESG component. ♻Sustainable Farming: Ucrop.it, an Argentina-based agtech company that tracks farmers’ sustainable practices on its blockchain-enabled platform, announced the close of a pre-series A funding round of $3.1 million. This deal was led by Yugen Partners in New York and existing investor, The Yield Lab LATAM. Closed Loop Partners, which participated in ucrop.it’s $1.1 million seed round last year, also joined this round. New investors backing the startup include Harris Investment Group, Glocal and several family offices. ♻Sustainable Water: Intel has long sought to lower its water impact, and with internal water management facilities, restoration projects, and other endeavors the company says its operations in three countries are now net-positive with water use. The company says water is one of the most important parts of its operations, and in 2021 it used 16 billion gallons of freshwater, reclaimed water, and desalinated water. Intel says internal water management practices have resulted in more than 13 billion gallons of that water going back into surrounding communities. ♻Hydroponic Farming: Jeddah: Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil and with limited amounts of water. As a farming method, it has a number of benefits: It helps to develop fibrous roots for improved nutrient absorption, reduces the risk of roots rotting and promotes the rapid maturity of plants. In recent years, several agribusinesses in Saudi Arabia have started using hydroponics systems, after conducting intensive research, collecting data, and devising suitable mechanisms, with the aim of keeping pace with the Kingdom’s soaring population and food requirements.
