A strange day of tech trials
Hello all, and happy Wednesday.
Wasn't sure I was going to get a newsletter in today, it's been one of those sort so of days!
I started the day finalising a Strategic Review for one of my business colleagues. Made sure everything was just so, but unfortunately one of the team was sick, so we agreed to postpone. It wouldn't have been the same without him there! (in an act of serendipatiousness, my baker hadn't been able to deliver me a tray of Swedish buns today, which turned out to be great, otherwise I'd have had to have eaten them all!)
So I now had some time on my hands which I hadn't expected. I put a download on the website and recorded a quick video to go alongside it. It's a template for an acceptable use policy. (Do you have one in your employee packs?)
Then I received a call from someone wanting to get a 365 package and some other bits, including web hosting. I was able to put a proposal together and save anyone having to do that!
THEN, I received an email from a customer wanting to completely change their email domain. I went back with a couple of suggestions based on availability. Let's say their name is John Smith for the sake of protecting them. I suggested johnsmith.com and johnsmith.co.uk, and they came back with "could we have john.e.smith?"
I politely replied, "no."
I then got to thinking, how do I explain why not in easy terms? It's simple enough for me as an IT professional to understand why this isn't possible, but how to convey that in simplistic terms?
I didn't end up explaining it. I know the customer well, and they are not tech-savvy at all, but they do trust that I give sound advice.
In case you were wondering and don't know, john.e.smith.co.uk would actually be smith.co.uk, which is very taken already. The john.e. parts would be sub-domains of smith.co.uk, much like office.microsoft.com is a sub-domain.
There's not a lot of tech news that I want to impart today really. I hope you have a good rest of week.
Until next time,
Mike
