Stop Comparing Photography to CGI

Stop comparing CGI to Photography....it really doesn't matter anymore. #pikcells

People often ask me how CGI works with conventional photography workflows.

The simplest way to describe how photo-realistic CGI works in comparison to traditional photography is by pouring water from one cup to another. With the exception of product manufacturing and product logistics needed with photography, the two methods produce the same results. The difference is that photography dies on the vine with one capture while CGI lives in perpetuity with the ability to change and adjust for years with - Photo-Real CG Images, Interior Design, Styling, WebGL,VR,AR,Software Dev, UI, UX.

The brick and mortar expectations are all the same. Conceptual development, creative pre-pros, set design, material selection, architectural styles, determining demographics, props etc...all the preliminary efforts and considerations that art directors and marketers are familiar with are the same with traditional content creation. The difference is that when it's time to build the set or go on location using traditional photography, CGI environments are created virtually. Key lighting, bounce cards, lens selections, atmospheric distortions, time of day, prop placement and every other aspect of what you'd expect with traditional photography, exists while creating a virtual environment in CGI.

Is CGI going to replace traditional photography? If Ikea has anything to say about photo-realistic CGI replacing traditional photography, the answer would be absolutely. Over 75% of Ikea's printed catalogue is currently CGI. For the rest of us who aren't Ikea, I would say that incorporating both methods into your arsenal of creating content, is paramount to providing the best solution for omni-channel marketing efforts.
