Spinning Wheels, Doing Digital Transformation without Cultural Transformation or Data Value maximization
Digital transformation has emerged as a crucial strategy to leverage technology, processes, and data to enhance business operations and deliver value to customers. Businesses must adapt to the ever-evolving technological advancements to stay competitive.
At the heart of any successful digital transformation mission is the ability to provide value to the business, the constituents and Ecosystems that organizations exist in and contribute to.
Measurement and attainment of this value add comes from a full realization of where we are and where we want to go and how we made a difference in the process, impact is what is felt as the result of any transformation journey; in each journey there are partners in the journey who, through sheer willingness and support can make the destination reachable and thus these values are realized.
Digital Transformation is a journey and data is its fuel, a mentor of mine once said, Data has to be looked at as assets for the organization through the data life time, from Creation, Curation, Categorization, Cultivation and mining for value creation. Which ultimately leads to capitalization of data as a real differentiated asset.
In order to properly deal with data, it is by far not accumulation of data in a single and accessible repository, It requires a systematic approach that focuses on:
Data Governance: Establishing clear policies, standards, and processes for data management ensures data quality, accuracy, and security. Data governance frameworks facilitate data transparency, accessibility, and accountability throughout an organization.
Data Integration: Siloed data impedes the ability to derive meaningful insights. Integrating data from disparate sources creates a comprehensive view that helps identify correlations, patterns, and trends, leading to informed decision-making.
Data Analytics: Implementing advanced analytics techniques, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, enables organizations to extract valuable insights from their data. Predictive and prescriptive analytics empower businesses to anticipate customer behavior, optimize operations, and identify new opportunities.
Doing all of the above would be a corner stone of Digital Transformation; however what will make it work, strive and grow in terms of value extraction would be the people and the organization functions that focuses and instills the culture of data as an asset and the organization direction should be driven by data, creating a data driven organization is a paramount step that usually organizations overlook or look at building it mid-way or after the fact; being inherently data-driven is the essence and should be the starting point even before launching the data strategy or digital transformation
Confusion around the importance of setting up the organization to become data aware and data driven, comes from the history of where reporting was an IT task and users would have to ask the glass house teams to produce reports based on data they have, this was enforced by a siloed structure of organizations, applications and data use, that was 3 to 4 decades old, and the number of interactions between IT and business was limited.
But now with Data being the blood flow that fuels innovations and the interactions that any organization is doing on multiple channels with the need to have a single version of the truth, always-on intelligent workflow and a data aware business automation; the siloed view has been orphaned by many organizations.
Organization change is a cultural change at its core without setting the right coherent and commonly adopted culture, organization change is just titles and seats with little effect in building the right organization stamina and harnessing the powers to a direction.
The mindset and behaviors within an organization play a pivotal role in maximizing data value. Here's how cultural transformation supports digital transformation:
Data-Driven Culture: People are the living fabric of enterprise. Transformation success cannot be achieved without the evolution of this fabric to suite the new enterprise purpose. Data facilitates people engagement into transformation process. It would furnish current market benchmarks, prescribe required uplifts and efficiency boosters, project improvements of new operating models paving the way for restructuring in a full people engagement mode. While AI facilitates people profile assessment for evolution, it maximizes human capitalization on both levels of corporate and personal.
Agile Mindset: Agile methodologies facilitate adaptability and responsiveness, crucial aspects of successful digital transformation. Embracing an agile mindset encourages experimentation, iteration, and continuous learning, enabling organizations to adapt quickly to market changes and leverage data insights effectively.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Teams: Breaking down silos and fostering collaboration among departments allows for a holistic approach to data utilization. Cross-functional teams bring together diverse perspectives, enabling innovative thinking and leveraging data insights across different areas of the organization.
Leadership and Change Management: Cultural transformation starts at the top. Leadership must champion digital initiatives, communicate the importance of data, and drive change effectively. By fostering a supportive environment and leading by example, leaders can inspire employees to embrace digital transformation and maximize data value.
In the era of digital transformation, organizations that harness the power of data and embrace cultural transformation gain a competitive advantage. Maximizing data value requires not only implementing robust data management practices but also instilling a cultural mindset that values data-driven decision-making, collaboration, and agility. By combining technological advancements with cultural transformation, businesses can unlock the full potential of their data and drive successful digital transformation initiatives, positioning themselves for growth and innovation in the digital age.

1yOssama El Samadoni And yet .. “ Industry Data” says that only 26% companies have Data Driven culture while 1 out of 4 companies do not (may not) have single source of truth with Centralized Data.
