Software. Hard Sell.
I'm a massive fan of cloud software, but they've been doing my head in recently.
There’s been a lot of TV and radio adverts from Quickbooks telling everyone how simple it is to do your tax return if you use their software.
It’s not just them. Sage has been at it for years, and Xero try the same approach. All telling you how simple it is to keep your accounts in order using their system.
How simple it is to do my job.
If that’s the case, why do people pay me? Do I sit at home doing my super simple job and laugh at people who throw money at me to do it for them? Or are the software companies telling little porky pies?
And then there's the other bold claim they make. If you use their software for your accounts you’ll get paid faster. Amazing! Your clients will suddenly hand over their cash at a rate of knots!
Hmm…
Unless your clients are plugged in to the matrix, I don’t see how using software to bill them is going to speed up their desire to send your money over.
I won't tell you whether you should believe the marketing team of multi-billion dollar software companies...
But I will tell you that most of the times I’ve had to sort out messy accounts, it’s been when people dived into using software and didn’t know how to use it.
Like everything, the tools are there, but you need to use them properly. If you send your clients statements, integrate the software with payment providers or utilise apps like GoCardless to take direct debit payments, you’ll find your clients pay faster. But none of that will happen just by signing up to software.
That's why I'm always happy to have a chat to help people get started on their bookkeeping journey, and guide them through how Quickbooks and Xero can actually make their lives easier.
And I'll even provide training and software subscriptions, so that you can get off on the right foot.
Helpful ain't it?
In the software industry, there's a misconception that the best-case scenario is to have a single piece of software that does everything, from manufacturing to HR to accounting, and more. I disagree. Modern software packages usually have the ability to communicate with each other, though often they need a little help. My opinion is that you should invest in multiple good software packages, and then also invest in a software consultant who can make them talk to each other.

4yIn these COVID times I wonder if software companies are slowing becoming the proverbial "bloke down the pub says..."?
Quantum computing - tons of hype here. The biggest misconception is that it will never bear any value (when proofs exist to argue otherwise), when the truth is programming these computers to do something useful is incredibly hard! Nonetheless, we're here to open the door for everyone to explore it for themselves and hopefully build lasting value for the world.
