My Book Mastering the Basics: Simple Lessons for Achieving Success In Business

Throughout my entire career, in articles I’ve written and in videos I’ve posted here on LinkedIn I’ve often talked about the importance of social skills, people skills, emotional intelligence, and most importantly doing the best we can to believe in our abilities.

Sometimes it’s not easy as we may get intimidated by those with lofty titles or advanced degrees, but we can’t let those people hinder our growth, silence our voices, or impact our self-confidence. Early in my career I did let that happen to me, but then I realized that being true to yourself, focusing on what really matters in life, and mastering the basics is what can set you apart from the rest and make you feel fulfilled.

This is a short video from one of my LinkedIn Learning Courses where I talk about mastering basic skills.

I’ve just started reading your book Dean and already I’m shouting “yes!” Anyone who loves the books ‘up the organisation’ and ‘what they don’t teach you at business school’ has got to be a good guy. But then I already knew you were one of those!!

Excited about your new book, Dean.  You know I'm a big fan.  There's a saying "everything you need to know, you learned in Kindergarten."  While this might seem overly simplistic, it's not far from the truth.  As a pre-school and kindergarten assistant (in my new life) I strive each day to show the kids how to get along with one another, the importance of listening, enjoying simple tasks and always aiming to do their personal best.  We practice sharing, caring, manners, to use a napkin after lunch, how to wait your turn...all challenging for 3-6 year olds, but also a challenge for adults.  Mastering these basic skills is critical to success in just about anything.  They are the soft skills I always tried to bring to the table when I worked in publishing,  Think about what you learned in Kindergarten !  It's really good stuff.

I look forward to reading this! I was in the building materials business for a long time before becoming self-employed, and I'm often amazed ay how many people in the customer service realm lack the most basic people skills (and these are small. local businesses).
