Scrappy Audience Research for the ADHD Mind
Hi,
If you are neurodivergent, some stuff may simply not work the same way for you.
- My brain makes connections between topics that have nothing in common at first glance: I am awesome at metaphors. This is something that I keep in mind because I never know what my brain will connect what I want to talk about with another topic I am delighted to learn more about (aka me going down a rabbit hole that isn't tied to work). Jot down those connections, they make great posts that intrigue people. Sometimes, other people have already connected the two ideas you connected so Google it and you may stumble upon something you will love sharing with folks.
- If you go into tools to get inspiration of what to talk about, all posts will start looking the same and be incredibly boring. And if they are boring, it will feel like torture because you aren't getting that dopamine hit you seek. Write down why it feels boring, snark away, think about what you'd do differently, the type of thing that you'd want to read instead of being stuck reading those boring headlines.
- Harness your flow, this will help you. Do the writing and "putting stuff together" instead of the curation when you enter a flow state.
- Take a deep dive in a niche subreddit: sort by all time best. You'll quickly see the type of human content folks like, not just stuff that's built on a good hook and doesn't really deliver. Humans are weird and full of quirks. Embrace niche quirks, it's something you are good at naturally so for once, you are in your element.
- Have an anti-inspiration: that one person or brand that makes your blood pressure rise because you simply do. not. comprehend...what the fuss is about. Go on, let them inspire you to do the absolute opposite and do it better than them. You know what people want and it's not this because clearly, it doesn't work for you. Be careful and make sure it's not just the curse of knowledge playing tricks on you but truly this person's/brand's WHATEVER if not working for you.
