Same s**t, different company

Same s**t, different company

If you’re currently interviewing, perhaps you’ve had the feedback,

"we thought you were great but you didn’t have all the experience we need..."

In other words, the company is saying it’s looking for a candidate that has experience in all areas of the job.

You must be kidding, right!?!

Let me make some assumptions which I don’t think are crazy;

  • You’re currently in a job (record employment so highly likely)
  • You’re performing (of course)
  • You want to progress, develop, grow, learn, be challenged...(obvs!)
  • There are LOTS of great B2B marketing jobs out there (fact)

Now here’s the KILLER question;

Why would you want to move jobs to do pretty much the same thing but for somebody else?

*Of course I wouldn’t Matt, are you losing your mind?*

Well, I guess you might if money was a major motivator and it paid more.

Or if the company you were considering was a B2B Superbrand.

But realistically, most people wouldn't.

And here lies the mismatch;

• Employers want candidates to have experience in virtually all areas of the b2b marketing job they want to fill

• Candidates (who are performers and top 15%) will ONLY move jobs to stretch themselves and learn new things

This mismatch may explain why some companies are finding it harder to fill their roles.

From my experience, companies that recruit employees in ‘lateral transfer' moves, where they ultimately do the same s**t but for someone else, become demotivated, disengaged and ultimately leave. Or become despondent and just don't perform.

On the flip side, recruiting someone who has some of the experience but not all of it, with lots of ability to do the job, means you’ll end up recruiting the best talent out there.

"You’ll be giving them development, learning opportunities and a new challenge. And they’ll repay you by staying for longer, being more productive and generally being a positive person in the business."

Have you experienced a lateral move, what happened? Do you think companies are too prescriptive in their requirements? Did you make a move that stretched you?
