Safeguarding Lake Tahoe: What You Need to Know About Algal Blooms

Safeguarding Lake Tahoe: What You Need to Know About Algal Blooms

The tragic report of a dog passing away due to algae exposure after swimming at El Dorado Beach and Nevada Beach hits home. Tahoe is a dog-loving community. Our hearts go out to the pet’s owner, and we want to assure our community that we are taking every precaution to keep Lake Tahoe safe for all.

Here’s What We Know:

  • Extensive Testing Conducted: We’ve been in close contact with the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, who led the response to the report of a possible harmful algal bloom. Following the report, thorough water quality tests were quickly conducted at El Dorado Beach and Nevada Beach.

  • Findings: We are pleased to report that no toxins associated with Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) were detected in the Lake water at either beach. This means the water at these popular spots is safe for swimming and other recreational activities.

  • Precautionary Measures: Although the Lake water is safe, low cyanotoxin levels, called saxitoxin, were found in a shallow pond near Nevada Beach, which is not connected to Lake Tahoe. A HAB Watch Advisory has been issued for the pond and the area is being fenced off to ensure the safety of pets and their owners.

  • Safety Assured: Based on the scientific tests, Lake waters at El Dorado Beach and Nevada Beach have been declared safe for swimming and recreational activities. The advisory signs have been lifted, and we encourage you to enjoy the beautiful waters of Lake Tahoe with your pets.

Empowering You to Protect Lake Tahoe:

The League is a science-based organization, and so are the agencies who led the response. In these situations, the results of scientific testing guide us and the agencies to the proper next steps that will protect water quality and all who enjoy it – pets included. Here’s how you can help:

  • Report Possible HABs: Be aware of how to identify and report suspected harmful algal blooms. In California, report possible HABs here. In Nevada, here

Stay Vigilant and Informed:

  • Follow the latest updates on water quality and HABs for California and Nevada

  • Enjoy the lake responsibly and keep an eye on your pets to ensure they avoid stagnant or suspicious-looking water.
