Ready for Actionship(™️): Increase Black Representation at Your Organization
Are you looking to increase representation at your organization? I want you to pause at this moment and imagine a scenario with me.
It’s my first time meeting you at a party and in a group of mutual connections. I’m talking to everyone else, but I never acknowledge you the entire time, not even eye contact. The event ends and it’s Monday morning. I have a huge project that I need support on. I discussed it with a friend from the party, who tells me that you are an expert on the subject and suggests I should reach out. I do just that and share that we met at the event and were referred to you for guidance.
Would you trust me?
Would you feel excited to support me?
I never considered or even acknowledged you in the group.
Would you feel used?
This is how many who identify as Black within the workplace feel. Many feel they are simply a NUMBER. The days of solely focusing on LinkedIn or other common platforms to find and recruit Black talent is getting old.
The number 1 question my clients ask me is how to best increase representation. I love getting this question, because not only does it mean they’re ready to engage in what I call “Actionship™,” there are many actions that they can take immediately. First, I tell my clients that they must start by identifying several key factors:
- Which race/ethnicity demographic is lacking the most within your organization?
- Be honest with yourself and acknowledge why this gap exists within your organization! You must tap into your gap or it will be difficult to solve.
- You didn’t care about this topic until you received pressure from employees or DEI industry-wide pressure?
- It didn’t personally impact you?
- You tried convincing leadership, but they didn’t see the issue.
- You only used standard networking platforms to recruit (mostly LinkedIn).
- Do your research and create a list of events for the year that focuses on Black professionals. Don’t wait for your Black friend or DEI leader to do this for you.
- Speak with folks when you attend the event.
With the answers to these questions, we work together on building a plan for success.
With that said, don’t miss out on attending this year’s “Roadmap To Billions,” where we dive into Black women in tech and all we can do to support them.
Black women receive 0.2% in venture capital, and we want to change that! This is why many Black women have a full time job and work on the weekends to build and grow their business. I’m speaking from experience! I was committed to my full time job and growing my business.
I’m excited about moderating a panel with incredible women.
The 6th Annual Roadmap to Billions conference will be held June 15-17 before Juneteenth Weekend at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York. The event will be hybrid, offering virtual activations and livestream content for the online audience.
This is the largest tech gathering for Black women in the World. 2,000 founders will be in attendance for the only annual tech conference created exclusively by Black women tech founders for Black female and non-binary founders and allies. The conference is built from the perspective of women and the goal is to showcase the brilliance of Black women in tech, create a stage for their experiences, foster deep connections, and create real funding opportunities.
Don’t miss out on connecting with incredible talent and sharing job opportunities at your company.
