Pursuing Curiosity with Lindsay Rogers: Episode 40

So many of us have forgotten what it’s like to be curious.

We believe that it’s a sentiment only limited to childhood and we’ve forgotten what it’s like to learn and explore because we want to, and not because we have to.

As we become adults, we lose our sense of wonder and become anxious in our search for certainty.

We’re so set in our traditional ways of thinking that we likely push aside the voice inside that dares to ask, ‘what if’ or ‘just try.’

But what if our curiosity is actually the secret to our success?

Our guest on Episode 40 wholeheartedly believes that curiosity is her greatest strength.

In fact, she credits curiosity as the driving force behind the accomplishments of her creative content agency, Chello.

Although Lindsay began with minimal business experience, her inquisitive mind and sense of wonder helped her team turn over a million dollars in revenue within their first 12 months and even earned her a coveted spot on the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2017.

So how exactly did Lindsay’s curiosity inspire her entrepreneurial journey?

The Winning Mindset:

“[My dad] always challenged my way of thinking by asking ‘why not give this a go?’...[This gave] me a curiosity for doing things a different way.” [3:44]

Taking Risks:

“[The owner] of Take One productions said he wasn’t sure if he should hire me because I was so young. And I said, let me work for free for one week and prove I can do this. I ended up working there for 5 years [to the point]  that the owner said I would one day own the business.” [13:00]

Gaining Confidence:

“I saw the opportunity and I backed myself. [This] is one of the most important things. No one will back you as much as you have to back yourself. No one is going to hand you a silver bullet. There’s no red carpet. You have to put yourself out there.” [18:12]

The Importance of Consistency:

“Consistently delivering and keeping your word is one of the most undervalued traits. There have been numerous do or die moments where I’ve wondered whether I own up [to a mistake] or throw it under the cuff. But honesty is the best medicine. I want to sleep with a clear conscience that I’ve done the best of what I had to do.” [19:51]

From Humble Beginnings to Victory:

“The Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year Award was the first award we won as a business. I was scraping the barrel to be a finalist and we were stoked to be there after just the first 12 months [of business]. I remember talking to a judge and asking why I won and she said ‘for your passion, your vibrancy and your potential for the future’.” [31:33]

How to become more curious?

“Always asking questions and listening more than speaking. There’s so much to learn from anyone and good ideas can come from anywhere.” [41:24]
