Overcome Writer’s Block – 5 brilliant tips to try.

My hands hover over the keyboard, shaking with anticipation at the words that will flow forth and I wait…. and I wait…. and I wait some more and nothing comes!

It was only last night when I was sitting on the sofa watching a boring telly box,  I had the sudden inspiration hit me to have something I was going to write a blog about!  And had I got up there (to my office) I’m sure my creativity would have flowed no-end. But now today, when I’m in the office and ready to write?  Nothing, Nada it’s so frustrating.  I found myself staring at the computer screen having procrastinated for the last 7 weeks over writing a goddamn blog only to get writer’s block.

When running a small business and creating content for your website, there is nothing more frustrating than experiencing writer’s block. It’s that dreaded feeling of staring at a blank page, unable to conjure up any words or ideas. However, don’t let this temporary obstacle hinder your creative process! Here are some tips to help you overcome writer’s block and get back to writing.

Firstly, let’s lighten the mood with a funny example. Imagine you’re writing a romance novel, and suddenly you find yourself unable to write the next chapter. Your characters seem to have lost all sense of romance, and everything you write sounds corny and cliché. You try to get some inspiration by watching romantic comedies, but the only thing you achieve is binge-eating a whole tub of ice cream. Suddenly, you have an epiphany and decide to write a new genre – a horror novel!  As it turns out, your romantic lead is secretly a werewolf, and the damsel in distress discovers his terrifying secret. Voila! You’ve overcome writer’s block and created a new plot twist.

Now, let’s dive into some helpful tips for overcoming writer’s block:

  1. Take a Break

Sometimes, the best thing to do is to take a break. Whether it’s a walk outside or a meditation session, stepping away from the page can help you clear your mind and come back with a fresh perspective. A break can also give you time to brainstorm and organize your thoughts.

  1. Change Your Environment

A change of environment can be a great way to spark your creativity. If you’re used to writing at your desk, try switching to a coffee shop or a park. A different setting can help you feel more inspired and open to new ideas. Plus, people-watching can be a great source of inspiration for characters and settings.

  1. Freewriting

Freewriting is a technique where you write without stopping for a set period of time, without worrying about spelling, grammar, or coherence. The goal is to let your thoughts flow freely and uncensored. Freewriting can help you break out of your writer’s block by getting your creative juices flowing. You might not use what you write in your final piece, but it can help you generate new ideas.

  1. Collaborate

Collaborating with other writers or artists can be a great way to overcome writer’s block. Bouncing ideas off of someone else can help you generate new ideas and gain new perspectives. Plus, it can be a lot of fun! You could even try writing a piece with a friend where you alternate writing paragraphs or chapters.

  1. Break It Down

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a big project, try breaking it down into smaller tasks. Instead of focusing on writing an entire novel, focus on writing one chapter or even one page. Breaking down a project into smaller tasks can make it feel more manageable and less daunting.

In conclusion, writer’s block is a temporary obstacle that can be overcome. Remember to take breaks, change your environment, try freewriting, collaborate with others, and break down big projects into smaller tasks. And, if all else fails, take inspiration from your favourite rom-com and turn your romantic lead into a werewolf. Happy writing!
