AgriBrasilis – Are the recent fires in sugarcane fields in the State of São Paulo a result of criminal activity?

José Nogueira – We are still awaiting the investigations that are being carried out by the State Secretariat of Public Security and the Federal Government.

AgriBrasilis – Is there still a risk of new fires happening in the region?

José Nogueira – We are working together with the Crisis Office of the Governor of the State of São Paulo to mitigate any other type of fire that may occur, despite the cold temperatures having arrived and the Ribeirão Preto region having recorded rainfall, the weather is expected to continue dry and hot for the next few days and the concern still exists.

In the 2024/25 season, corn area is expected to be 6.3 million ha, a drop of 17.1% compared to the previous season. This is due to the greater proliferation of pests, mainly the leafhopper, and the drought. “After the rains, early planting is expected to become more widespread in the central agricultural area,” said the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange. The 2024/25 soybean harvest is estimated at 169.9 million tonnes, an increase of 11.8% compared to the previous season. The planted area is to increase by 1.6%, reaching 46.2 million ha. “The growth in area is lower than in recent years, due to the expectation of positive operating margins but below the average observed in the last decade”, said consultancy firm Céleres. In July, wheat milling in Biobío, Chile, was around 14,269 tonnes, an increase of 56.9% compared to the same period last year, due to the greater processing of wheat products and by-products. From July of 2023 to July this year, the total number of products originating from wheat was 11,395 tonnes (+57.3), and by-products totaled 2,874 tonnes (+55.2%). Brazil and Mexico strengthen meat trade relations. “With imports, they (Mexico) meet the domestic demand for a certain type of meat. Thus, they gain scale to export other cuts, according to the current strategy,” said Lhais Sparvoli, director of International Relations at the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries. In August, cattle slaughter had a drop of 12% compared to the previous month, totaling around 1.47 million heads slaughtered since January. However, exports registered a slight increase, with 221.69 million kg this year. (senacsa)

Unifrutti announced the acquisition of Verfrut, a fruit producer and exporter. With this, it “consolidates its portfolio of grapes, cherries, apples and blueberries, becoming one of the largest producers of table grapes and cherries in the world… and an important fruit platform in Chile and Peru”, said the company. The changes in prices paid for beef cattle began 2024 with constant declines. With the reference for gross and forward prices in São Paulo, there was a drop of around US$ 3.60/@ between January and April [@, or “arroba” is equal to 15 kg] . The recovery in the middle of the year is due to greater demand, mainly internal, but the increased supply in the winter period ended up bringing lower prices (mid-June to July).

Crop Protection and Nutrition – Weekly Update Brazil & Latin America (08/29/24 – 09/04/24)

The Environment and Natural Resources Commission of Entre Ríos, Argentina, chaired by provincial congressman Juan Manuel Rossi, is scheduled to meet on September 4th to evaluate an initiative that regulates the use of agrochemicals in the region. Among other regulations, the minimum spraying distances between crops and populated areas should be discussed. (Government of Argentina)

Syngenta Crop Protection sales fell 21%, reaching US$ 6.2 billion in the 1H 2024. The company was affected by reduced inventories in key markets and adverse weather conditions, such as flooding in southern Brazil. In Latin America, there was a 17% drop in sales. Sales in the seed segment reached US$ 2.4 billion, a drop of 4% compared to 2023. In Latin America, seed sales fell 34% due to diseases that damaged the corn market in Argentina. The company expects sales and margins to improve in the 2H 2024. (Syngenta)

Bolivian government approved a zero tariff for imports of agrochemicals and agricultural machinery. “President Luis Arce has promulgated a decree that reduces the tariff to zero in the case of agrochemicals and machinery. This helps the sector and alleviates the price increase that has occurred for these items”, said the minister of economy and public finance, Marcelo Montenegro. (Government of Bolivia)

Lavoro Agro announced expansion into Ecuador, strengthening its presence in Latin America through the AGROINTEGRAL brand, which already operates in Colombia. According to Ruy Cunha, CEO of Lavoro, the first year of operations in Ecuador will be focused on market development and in finding new customers. Kassio Ferreira Mendes is a researcher and professor of traceability in agricultural and environmental quality at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture at the University of São Paulo, an agronomist from the State University of Mato Grosso, a M.Sc. in plant production at UFV and a Ph.D. in nuclear energy in agriculture at Universidade de São Paulo.

Kassio Mendes – Herbicides can interact in different ways with the environment. It is the retention, transport and transformation processes that govern the behavior and fate of herbicides in the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to know the physical and chemical properties of herbicides and of the soils, in addition to environmental conditions.
