Never perfect. Always better.

Never perfect. Always better.

Leadership is not about achieving perfection; it’s about striving for something better. Just as the U.S. Constitution sets the goal of creating “a more perfect union,” your journey as a leader is about continuous improvement. Leadership will never be perfect, but it can always be better.

Here’s the thing: We need to confront an uncomfortable truth about building leadership skills. Until we do, we’ll stay stuck thinking about leadership development as nothing more than a checklist of techniques to master.

So, here it is: We don’t need more leaders armed with more techniques. We need leaders who think differently.

At Slingshot25, we take a deep learning approach to the core skills that actually transform leadership: humility, curiosity, empathy, and belief in others. Yet, time and again, we hear people say, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, those skills are obvious. I got this.”

Newsflash: You don’t got this. Because none of us do.

Think about it: Do you show up to every leadership moment with full humility, curiosity, empathy, and belief in others? Really? Every single time?

Unlikely. These aren’t skills you check off a list and move on from. They’re a life-long learning odyssey. Your only goal is “better,” and better is never done.

Leadership, much like the pursuit of a more perfect union, requires constant attention, effort, and growth. The only way to get there is to continually revisit, explore, experiment, and discover more of what you’re capable of as a leader.

Here are a few self-reflection questions to help you along the way:

  • How much do I believe there is always room for improving my leadership skills?

  • What is my routine to continually build the core skills of humility, curiosity, empathy, and belief in others?

  • What is my next leadership development action?

Take some time to think about these questions. And remember: leadership isn’t a checklist; it’s a journey. Let’s keep striving for better.

Love the challenge questions. My answers: Always - Faith - Seek This is a leadership post with truth and a central theme of humility, you’re right, we don’t have it and I don’t know what the people around me need. But I am human just like them and can come alongside others in their walk to feel the mutual support and challenge to be better together in this journey.
