National Superhero Day- April 28, 2024
Have you ever been rescued from a risky situation or saved from injury or death? Those who come to our aid are called heroes. Some heroes happen to be in the right place at the right time. Others choose to be a hero as a career (though they wouldn't call themselves heroes.) Other still are fictional creations that inspire us with hope. Each year on April 28th, National Superhero Day honors superheroes, both real and fictional.
Every year April 28 marks National Superhero Day in the United States. The day is commemorated to honor reel and real superheroes for contributing to society, including the brave heroes of 9/11 and the Covid-19 pandemic. This interesting tradition traces its roots back to 1995 when Marvel, a bestselling comic book publisher, took to the streets to survey children about what superpowers they would want to have if possible. Surprisingly, the results revealed that the children talked about real-life superheroes in their lives and they are equivalent to superheroes narrated in comic books. This revelation by children prompted Marvel and other publishers to commemorate a day tribute to such superheroes who save the world from adversities in actuality and fiction.
There are many fictional Superheroes in the world, but the real superheroes in my life are part of the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, including @Chris Krueger and Ryan Patrick, who saved my son's life on January 13, 2015.
On January 13, 2015, Evan was laughing so hard that he aspirated, falling unconscious; resulting in 90 minutes of CPR and an anoxic brain injury. Evan has damage to the basal ganglia and occipital lobes. He spent two and a half weeks in the PICU at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, during which the goal was to heal his lungs. By the end of the first 24 hours of his stay, he wasn't doing well - not well enough to survive and not well enough for the pulmonologist to determine what was causing his lungs to fail. Thankfully, the medical team decided to go ahead and do a bronchoscopy to see what was happening… The ENT extracted raw carrots from his lungs. Evan had eaten carrot sticks with dinner - approximately two hours before aspirating. Evan was put in a medically induced coma for several days and his body was cooled to preserve whatever brain function remained. After he was warmed to normal body temperature, an MRI was completed to assess the damage. When Evan's lungs were completely healed, he received a gastronomy tube and two days later we left the PICU to go to Kennedy Krieger Institute. Evan was in-patient there for six weeks and received two-three sessions daily of OT, PT, Speech and Recreational Therapies. Prior to this injury, Evan was a typically developing, very active toddler.
Anyone who meets Evan and spends just a few minutes with him can easily tell that he is happy, smart, perceptive, sensitive, stubborn and overall, truly "gets it." His cognition and personality are two abilities that he did not lose with his injury. He is very aware of his environment. Evan responds and reacts to his surroundings with facial expressions and vocalizations. His reactions to new situations are appropriate. Evan enjoys socializing with other children and is responsive to their words and actions. At times, Evan will vocalize certain words. Although inconsistent, when Evan does say these words, it is clear and appropriate.
Among the many firefighters who were there that night helping my son, they are the true superheroes.
Firefighters Are Heroes Because They Run Towards the Danger
Firefighters Are Heroes Because They Never Give Up
Firefighters Are Heroes Because They’re Also Scientists
Firefighters Are Heroes Because They Inspire Others
Firefighters Are Heroes Because They Do More than Fight Fires
As for real-life superheroes, National Superhero Day also recognizes those who we look up to every day. No matter if they wear masks, capes, scrubs, or uniforms, everyone has someone they think of as a superhero. This national day began and grew so that everyone’s role models could get a well-deserved shout-out for whatever hard work they do.

8moWow Jason, thank you for sharing! Indeed Firefighters are true superheroes. When I served as the Secretary of the Department of Safety and Professional Services I worked to ensure our state’s firefighters were safe and supported. I updated the safety protocols for firefighters and created a grant program focused on recruitment and retention. The program was the firefighter youth grant program modeled after the one at the Sun Prairie Fire Department. It was designed to introduce the fire service to high school students by offering an entry level fire safety class. It required partnerships between the Fire Department, high school, and area Technical College. We awarded three grants in the first year. I smile every time I drive past Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Oconto High School, and Oconto Fire Department were recipients. In building the grant, I went through a mini-training at Sun Prairie where I carried a firehose up 4 flights of stairs, pulled a weighted sled 50 feet and, used an 🪓 to chop through a door 🚪 to get a sense of what might be necessary to respond to a call. Updating training, the grant, and this activity confirmed how much of a superhero firefighters were. I was proud to add to their safety!
