My simplistic take on AI and its impact on jobs

I have been thinking and reading a lot about AI and how a lot of jobs would be made redundant. Summarising my thoughts here.

I am also planning to deep dive into my 11 years of work experience to go back and check where AI could have replaced me or my team to help me better understand this.

What is intelligence?

Intelligence is basically processing.

We are given a set of commands - in any shape and form (what is 2+3, our reaction to situations, determining the next event/object basis what is already given) - our response to that after this 'processing' defines how intelligent we are.

Human intelligence is of 3 types*

- analytical

- creative; &

- practical

Artificial intelligence is not different at all. It is the case of a non-living which can process input and come back with an output.

IMO, excel being able to do 2+3 was also artificial intelligence. It needed a specific way to input but still I would categorise it as AI

AI today and its impact on jobs

Computers/Internet always had analytical intelligence. You could throw questions and get answers. The problem there was in giving the right input - that's where a lot of jobs were created.

For example - MS Excel can perform really complicated arithmetic calculations but to get what we want we need to use specific formula or a combination of them which required a certain expertise.

AI today replaces this complicated way of providing input to natural language conversation. Jobs that rely on such expertise will be made redundant mostly

Computers/Internet rarely had any creative intelligence. They could mostly not create connections, storylines etc. They could not suggest experiments that could help us get desired results. A lot of jobs were created to handle this area - create a deck, create a song, create a plot, create an image etc.

AI today is now capable of doing this iteratively at a fraction of time compared to what a human could do.

This is where another set of jobs could be at risk

Practical intelligence is a lot to do with how we interact with the physical world. This also has a lot to do with people who were hiring people with analytical and creative intelligence to get a lot of work done. From what I know, AI is yet not there. These jobs are safe

As mentioned above, I will soon be sharing examples from my experience of the critical tasks that I and my teams have done and what would have been different if we had AI as is today or is expected to develop in the next 2-3 years. Stay tuned!

My purpose of writing is to learn more. These are just my simplistic views and in no way a comment on specific work profiles.
