My next chapter
Today starts the next chapter in my career. I’m delighted to share that I’m joining the product team at Facebook to lead the feed and stories for the Facebook app. Why Facebook? It came down to three things: the opportunity to innovate, the ability to impact billions of people with one of the world’s most popular products and work with some of the world’s best human talent.
In my last two roles at Google and Credit Karma, I was responsible for building new products from ground zero to a scale that now serve millions globally. Creating new things in a scaled business is my favorite type of work. It blends my skills as an entrepreneur with my experience as an executive and allows innovation to reach the masses in months instead of years. So I knew I wanted to continue this path. So when I met the team at Facebook, I was impressed by their desire to create and change the product in ways that can drive impact beyond where it is today. It was simply too compelling to resist.
I love consumer products and I’ve lead product teams on some of the biggest mobile products: Google Hangouts, Google Photos and most recently the Credit Karma app. The Facebook feed has transformed the world more than any other digital product (Google Search being the other). The impact this surface has on our planet and humanity is one of the greatest tech challenges of our day. It’s hard to stay on the sidelines for this one when so much good can come from the work.
Lastly, in each of my past roles, people have driven my career decisions. We spend more time at work than with our families, and learning from and teaching each other are the reasons I enjoy my work so much. So with Facebook, each person I met impressed me with their focus on collaboration, creativity, depth of skills and openness to change. I’ve known some of these leaders for well over a decade, and the opportunity to work with them and shape their team and product was impossible to ignore.
I’m energized by the challenge in front of me. I’ve always enjoyed solving hard problems as long as the outcomes matter, I enjoy the people I work with, and we can help everyday people lead a richer life. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
