There is more to Enterprise Mobility than Mobile Apps
More and more businesses are using mobile technology as a way to enhance the way they operate. It has been going on for years (calls on-the-go, SMS messaging, email, contact details etc.), yet the phrase "Enterprise Mobility" is becoming more and more frequent in reference to mobile apps.
Whilst a good mobile app can significantly improve the way a field-based worker operates, it is nothing more than an app unless it adds value to the process.
I speak to a variety of people every week and have conversations around how an effective enterprise mobile working strategy can significantly enhance the way their business operates. Some people completely understand what I mean, but others tend to ask me, "So are you an app development company?" and without trying to sound vague, I usually answer "Sort of, but not really..."
Mobile apps are everywhere now and are part and parcel of everyday life, so it is not surprising that I get asked that question. Just think about it. That email that popped up on your smartphone? An app. Updating a status on your favourite social media site? An app. Reading this post whilst you're out of the office? An app.
So how do I explain what the difference between a mobile app and enterprise mobility is? Well this varies, but to me this is how I usually sum it up:
Whilst a mobile app is an integral part of an effective enterprise mobile working strategy, enterprise mobility is far more. The app is usually the front-end part of the process and captures information at the user-level. This information is only useful if it can be used practically, automatically ideally, to enhance what you are already doing. Enterprise mobility is about the app, but also about the back-end integration into your existing systems. It is about streamlining a process whilst utilising modern smartphone technology in order to make your life easier and more efficient. So whilst you might be able to download an app from your favourite app store for 69p, will it do all the above?
The answer to that last question is usually "No..." but it then helps distinguish the difference between an app and enterprise mobility.
So if you are looking to use mobile technology to enhance your business operationally, with integration into your existing IT infrastructure, make sure you speak to a company that specialises in enterprise mobility and not just an app development company.
