Microsoft buys Github - is it realy good?

I fear for all developers when Satya Nadella , #Microsoft CEO says:

"First, we will empower developers at every stage of the development lifecycle – from ideation to collaboration to deployment to the cloud. Going forward, GitHub will remain an open platform, which any developer can plug into and extend. Developers will continue to be able to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects – and will still be able to deploy their code on any cloud and any device."

"Second, we will accelerate enterprise developers’ use of GitHub, with our direct sales and partner channels and access to Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure and services."

-..for us the developers it can be an end of an era..

Nothing at Microsoft ever been free. And if it was it was a bate to lure you into bonding you into additional commitment to the #Microsoft.

The most important feature of #Github is the free code. The npm by the most sourced by the github repositories supplying millions of downloads monthly.

Even from the first announcement of the #Microsoft leader we can see the monetization strategy between the lines.

As Microsoft goes more ROI dedicated it cancels the programs like BizSpark (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_BizSpark) and purchases the open source biggest system which was a direct competition on any code/software Microsoft produces.

It seems that it will not be a direction - if you can't win them join them , but rather a radical change of sharing and collaborating code for all of developers.

Thanks to open market there will always be an alternative - https://medium.com/flow-ci/github-vs-bitbucket-vs-gitlab-vs-coding-7cf2b43888a1

#BitBucket is one system I already worked with and found it good enough, but less open than Github.

So #Microsoft , when you are pricing #GitHub services keep that in mind.Collective hive mind is a very powerful thing ..

And #Github guys , I understand that it was not an easy time for you , but selling out like this is taking all of your followers that believed in your idea and just throw them under the bus. I hope that you will know how to navigate the ship towards free open source future although you are in the kingdom of the Microsoft now.

P.S.

Just to keep it diverse here is opposing post in favor of the purchase. It has some interesting facts although I do not agree on the free handouts of Microsoft stated in the post. - https://medium.com/@ow/microsoft-acquiring-github-is-a-good-thing-heres-why-6a6a57eb83ac

Pavel Yosifovich well the time will show, of course.. I think that a lot of open source lovers will find alternative on the first change, as Suleman said in reply to your remark.. And they will be right to do so. Github is fine just the way it is. I am most sure that it will not stay the same.. You can literally see it in the remarks of the Microsoft CEO the coming changes...
