Math beyond the empty box

Math beyond the empty box

A typical online algebra problem

A math prompt and an empty box. For many students, this is an invitation to freeze - and it is also the status quo for much of today's online math learning.

No work shown, no detailed feedback. Together, we can do better. That's why we want to convince Algebra learning sites to augment their "enter here" user experience with together.math.

Adding together.math is as easy as adding one button to the page
The button expands to let students work through the problem with instant or delayed feedback

With together.math, students can solve problems right in the browser. A simple click unfolds a workspace where it is easy and satisfying to write math, get instant feedback on correctness, and have tools like algebraic drag and drop, variable substitution, formulas and more. The host environment can easily check the answers, get all math to run it through an AI, and save the context of the workspace for future reference. Everything happens in the browser - other than hosting the package, there are no server compute or communications costs. Integration is easy - just a few lines of HTML and JavaScript with our simple SDK. Take a look at what working a problem in Khan Academy could be like:

Enabling students to show their work makes it possible:

  • for teachers and tutors to give pinpoint feedback

  • for AI to reason about the steps, not just the result

  • for the platform to gather customizable insights about the work such as steps and time taken, and what the most common mistakes are

  • for students to spend more time on the platform because it is productive instead of frustrating, and to build confidence in their work.

If you know of an algebra practice site or curriculum provider that should have this capability, let us know at [email protected]. And for non-profit sites, we will give it to them for free - as in: free. Hey Khan Academy : That's a mockup, but it could be real. And we would love to talk to you about it.
