LinkedIn Unlocked: Attract Attention from Recruiters, Network with Ease, and Master Job Search Shortcuts

What if you could organically attract interviews for your dream job through LinkedIn?

Even if you’ve been job searching for months with no traction or don’t have time to apply for jobs…

It’s been in my heart for many months to share all the ins and outs of job searching on LinkedIn. I’ve been convinced for some time that if job seekers only knew all the tools and features available to them and understood the current best practices for using LinkedIn that they could not only find perfect-fit jobs but have recruiters reaching out to them offering them amazing opportunities right up their alley.

I am so excited to share with you all that I’ve finally launched my LinkedIn course for job seekers.

What finally convinced me to take the plunge was helping my husband with his job search. He decided to make a complete career pivot from entrepreneurship into the nonprofit world. When he made that decision his LinkedIn profile was empty and he only had 19 connections. He was literally starting at ground zero.

I made five core changes to bring his profile up to speed and then we started using a step-by-step approach to networking, utilized insider shortcuts to find “unposted” jobs that were shared by other LinkedIn members, SEO-optimized and engineered his profile to attract recruiters and developed a content strategy to increase his visibility.

Within 24 hours he had a recruiter reach out requesting an interview, his profile views increased 8500%, and we quadrupled his network.

Within 7 days he had an interview with his number one target company and by day 12 he had an offer from them. On day 19 he accepted their formal offer for a role even better than the one he originally had an interview for.

That’s when I knew that I needed to take what I was doing for him in his job search and share it with other job seekers.

Since sharing several of the strategies and hacks I used in his job search I’ve received comments from job seekers sharing how it’s completely changed their lives and job search increased their profile views by 1200%, landed them interviews with their top companies, and had recruiters reaching out to them left and right.

One of my connections who followed the five core strategies I share below sent me this screenshot of her profile views and how much they shot up overnight.

Genie sent me this over the weekend after she implemented the third tip I share below about keywords and skills in your profile. I share this strategy in more detail in the LinkedIn Unlocked course.

The 5 core LinkedIn profile changes you need to make to increase your visibility

I mentioned at the beginning of my newsletter about making five core changes to my husband’s LinkedIn profile to get him off the ground and running before we started employing all the hacks, strategies, tools, best practices, and features LinkedIn offers. Here’s where we started:

Updated profile picture and banner

I used Canva to create a professional profile picture with a color branded background and a custom LinkedIn profile banner. It only takes about five minutes to do both and you can use a headshot you take from your cell phone and make it look professional. Here’s a quick video of how I did it.

The purpose of the banner is so that he would have cohesive personal branding and to encourage more recruiter outreach. The professional profile picture is a must because LinkedIn states your connection requests are 9X more likely to be accepted and your messages are more likely to be read if you have a profile picture.

A new headline to attract more recruiter attention

The next change I made was to update his LinkedIn profile headline to something more search-friendly that would increase his profile visibility. I explain my headline formula in detail in this video. It’s one of my favorite strategies for increasing profile discoverability and giving recruiters the information they need to know.

The formula includes using your target job title, three high-priority keywords, and a personal branding statement. I encourage you to watch the video for details on why each is important and how to put them together.

Maximized two critical LinkedIn sections

The third core step was to maximize two key LinkedIn profile sections; work history and skills. So many job seekers create a LinkedIn profile, and add their job titles and dates but fail to fill in the details of the role including their accomplishments. Another fatal error is leaving the skills section blank. LinkedIn tells us that if you include at least five skills on your profile you’re 27X more likely to be contacted by a recruiter. You have to fill out this section! In this video, I share exactly how I updated my husband’s skills section and what you need to include in the work history section so that you’re getting attention from recruiters.

Expand your network - it’s more critical than you think

When my husband first launched his job search he had 19 connections. We did two simple things to quadruple his LinkedIn connections. If you haven’t imported contacts or actively sought to expand your network you’ll want to watch this video to see exactly what to do. I also cover credentials and why they’re important for your job search on LinkedIn. (Hint: it has to do with SEO and being discovered by recruiters!). You must have first-degree connections to be able to broaden your network with second-degree connections. These second-degree connections matter to your job search and visibility.

Making connections at your target company

Finally, we proactively started making connections with decision-makers at his target company. I know a lot of job seekers are apprehensive about reaching out to hiring managers and employees at their target company. In my LinkedIn Unlocked course, I created an entire module dedicated to how to reach out to hiring managers, how to find them, what to say, and how to follow up. I even include content templates and samples messages so you’ll know exactly how to find the right person and what to say to them when you do. I even show you how to find the person hiring for that great job you saw posted on LinkedIn.

I am convinced that if you use the strategies I share above and those that I share in my new course you could conduct your entire job search using all the tools, features, and resources LinkedIn offers and be successful. It’s a bold statement, I know. But it works. It helped my husband pivot his career and land his dream job in 19 days and I’m confident these tools and strategies will help you too.

The article is INCREDIBLY helpful even for folks like me who’ve had an established profile for a reasonably long time. It’s been great to watch the embedded videos, too! They really helped walked me reconsider what was going in my skills and headline sections. Thanks!
