Leadership Lessons by Brian Tracy - Episode 10

The Leader as a Communicator

Effective leaders are exceptional communicators. Communication is a fundamental skill of leadership, with 85% of leadership success relying on the ability to connect and convey ideas effectively.

The good news is that communication is a skill that can be developed. To master it, focus on these five key objectives:

  1. Build respect and likability.

  2. Showcase your value and significance.

  3. Convince others to adopt your perspective.

  4. Inspire others to change their views and collaborate with you.

  5. Strengthen your influence in personal and professional relationships.

Communicate with Clarity

Great leaders clearly express their ideas, strategies, and vision. When organizations lose direction, it often stems from a lack of clarity about their purpose. In thriving organizations, employees at all levels understand their objectives, where the organization is headed, and what their roles entail.

To lead effectively, communicate your goals and expectations with precision. Ensure your team members understand how they contribute to the organization's success.

Define Clear Expectations

One of the most common workplace frustrations is uncertainty about job responsibilities. Surprisingly, many employees are unsure about what they should be doing, despite being tasked with advancing organizational goals. This ambiguity can lead to disengagement, negativity, and even workplace politics.

By setting clear expectations, you empower your team to stay motivated and contribute at their highest potential.

Prioritize Face-to-Face Interactions

The most impactful way to communicate is through direct, in-person conversations. History shows that great leaders—whether military generals or executives—spend significant time in the field, interacting with their teams.

As you climb the leadership ladder, prioritize being visible and accessible. Spend time in the field, not just behind your desk. This approach is equally vital when engaging with customers. Leaders should dedicate at least 25% of their time to understanding and addressing customer needs directly.

Adopt a Sales Mindset

Lastly, effective leaders are skilled at "selling." They consistently promote the organization’s mission, vision, and objectives. They inspire their teams to work harder, contribute meaningfully, and embrace greater responsibilities.

Leadership requires ongoing persuasion—whether motivating employees, gaining buy-in, or fostering commitment. The ability to communicate and "sell" ideas effectively is a hallmark of great leadership.
