Just a bookkeeper

Just a bookkeeper

I’m pretty awesome at bookkeeping. There. I said it. Call me bigheaded if you like, but sometimes you’ve gotta toot your own horn, right?

And I’m proud of being a bookkeeper. I’m not an accountant (well, I kinda am but I don’t admit to it. It’ll totally ruin my cred, right?). Bookkeeping is where it’s at.

But often bookkeeping isn’t seen as very important or valuable. So many times you’ll hear someone say “Oh you’re not an accountant? You’re just a bookkeeper.” Just a bookkeeper. Like it’s sooooo disappointing not to have an accountant to talk to. Coz they’re notorious for their thrilling conversation and sharp wit, right? “Darling, who have we got on the dinner party list? Graham Bland, the accountant? Oh marvellous! He’s a hoot!” Said no-one. Ever.

But anyone can be a bookkeeper right? Most people starting out in business do their own bookkeeping. Or get a friend or relative to do it for them. But what about when you grow and get too busy, or register for VAT? Things start to get a bit more complicated and accountants bills start to go up, because they don’t like doing the nitty gritty stuff, and fixing the things you didn’t know what to do with. Step in the superhero numbergeek who can sort it for you.

When it’s done properly, bookkeeping is more complicated than people think. In fact, bookkeeping isn’t really an accurate term for what we do. There’s such a variety of services offered, it’s almost impossible to decide what we should be called. Personally, I like mathmagician but not sure it’ll catch on… Double entry deviant?* Fnarr fnarr.

So really I am “just a bookkeeper”.

I just sort and file and process.

I just make sure I work in a way that suits you, so I don’t mess up your flow.

I just use language that you can understand and interpret what your accountant is trying to say.

I just prepare accounts to a high standard, so you may see your accountant’s bill reduce.

I’ve just spent years studying and taking exams to get qualified.

I can just tailor your information to help with any reporting you need.

I just use carefully selected software to make my business (and yours) as efficient as possible.

I just make sure you’re up to date with the latest requirements from HMRC, and I speak to them on your behalf to sort out any niggles.

I’m just friendly and approachable and I don’t charge you for picking up the phone.

I just work in the cloud, so when the world stops working (global pandemic anyone?!) I keep going, so you can keep going.

I’m just what your business needs.

Wellbalanced. Just bookkeepers.

*Double entry is a legit accounting term. Look it up and get your mind out of the gutter. Dirty bugger.
