The Human Side of Incorporating AI in a Candidate Search

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made some advancements in the process of hiring and recruiting. While the use of AI in recruitment can bring about various benefits, some potential drawbacks need to be considered.

One of the advantages that some purport in the use of AI in hiring and recruiting is the ability to quickly sift through large volumes of resumes and applications. AI can analyze resumes and match them with job requirements much faster than a human recruiter, saving time and streamlining the recruitment process. But what is missing from this process are the skills and experience of a recruiter who can “read between the lines” to only present the most qualified candidates.

AI can help remove unconscious bias at times by focusing solely on candidate qualifications and skills. Indeed, AI does not discriminate based on factors such as gender, race, or age. By taking bias out of the equation, organizations can ensure they are not considering candidates based on paper “professed” qualifications alone.

The Necessary Human Equation

While this can potentially lead to a more diverse and inclusive candidate pool, AI cannot provide any details about a candidate’s personality and/or ability to communicate. These skills can only be gleaned through the use of well-honed, thought-provoking questions and conversations with an experienced recruiter who can garner the personality traits that will be a potential fit for a position.

The use of AI in hiring and recruiting also presents additional potential challenges. One concern is the reliance on algorithms to make hiring decisions, which may overlook important aspects of a candidate's qualifications that cannot be captured by AI. This could lead to missed opportunities for organizations to hire the best candidates for a particular role.

Focusing only on using AI in recruiting may also depersonalize the hiring process, leading to a lack of human connection between candidates and employers. This can create a negative candidate experience and give the impression that the organization is more focused on efficiency than building relationships with potential employees.

Ultimately, while AI can bring about some benefits in the hiring and recruiting process, it's important to remember the value of human recruiters. Recruiters play a crucial role in understanding the needs of their organizations and building relationships with candidates. They bring a level of empathy, intuition, and personal touch that AI simply cannot replicate.
