How to Overcome the Challenges of Committing to Personal Development
According to research from the LPI, the number one obstacle to building a learning culture within organisations is time. Yet, we know that not only does personal development stand as a cornerstone for achieving success and fulfilment, it also drives business performance.
Committing to personal development, however, is not without its challenges. The journey often requires a significant investment of time, effort, and persistence. Here are some of the common obstacles individuals face and some practical strategies to overcome them.
Understanding the Challenges
1. Lack of Clear Goals One of the primary hurdles in personal development is the absence of well-defined goals. Without a clear direction, it becomes challenging to measure progress and stay motivated.
2. Time Management Issues Balancing personal development with professional responsibilities and personal life can be daunting. Often, individuals struggle to find the time to invest in their growth amidst a busy schedule.
3. Fear of Failure The fear of not succeeding can be paralysing. This fear often prevents individuals from stepping out of their comfort zones and taking the necessary risks for personal growth. We should remember – you either win or learn, you never lose.
4. Limited Resources Access to resources such as courses, mentors, and material can be limited, making it difficult to pursue personal development effectively.
5. Lack of Support Without a supportive environment, maintaining the motivation to continue personal development can be challenging. Peer support and encouragement play a crucial role in staying committed.
Strategies to Overcome the Challenges
1. Set SMART Goals Establish Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals. This approach provides clarity and helps in tracking progress, making the journey more manageable and rewarding.
2. Prioritise and Schedule Effective time management is key. Prioritise personal development activities and schedule them as you would any important meeting or task. Consistency is crucial, so even dedicating a small amount of time daily can lead to significant progress.
3. Embrace a Growth Mindset Shift your perspective towards challenges and failures. View them as opportunities for learning and growth rather than setbacks. This mindset fosters resilience and encourages continuous improvement.
4. Seek Out Resources Take advantage of online platforms, libraries, and communities that offer free or affordable resources. Networking can also lead to discovering valuable materials and opportunities for learning.
5. Build a Support Network Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who are also on a personal development journey. Join groups, attend workshops, and engage in communities that offer support and motivation.
Personal Development in Practice
I recently worked with a mid-level manager aiming to enhance her leadership skills. Initially, Jane (not her real name) faced the challenge of unclear goals and time constraints. By setting a SMART goal to complete a leadership course within three months and dedicating an hour every morning to study, she managed to balance her professional duties and personal development.
Jane also overcame her fear of failure by genuinely adopting a growth mindset, viewing each obstacle as a learning opportunity. She leveraged online resources and sought guidance from mentors within her organisation. This really enriched her learning experience. Additionally, towards the end, she joined a local leadership networking group, which provided her with the necessary support and motivation to stay committed to her goals.
Conclusion
Committing to personal development is undoubtedly challenging, but with clear goals, effective time management, a growth mindset, access to resources, and a supportive network, these challenges can be overcome. Personal development is a continuous journey that requires dedication and perseverance. But, by implementing these strategies, individuals can achieve their personal and professional aspirations.
Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make; the ultimate pension. My advice? Embrace the challenges, stay committed, and enjoy developing into the best version of yourself. As Michelangelo once said “Ancora Imparo”.

4moIndeed this is so relevant right now. I’ve recently decided to swap 30 minutes of doom scrolling for completing one Project Management OnDemand video a day. Breaking down the 35 hours of course work into these chunks feels manageable. And your point about fear of failure is really helpful too. If we don’t focus on the anxiety of whether we can accomplish something it allows us to just learn. Great advice Edmund Monk!

4moThe truth is there are no challenges to personal development apart from our self-imposed ones. There are only self limiting beliefs or an unsupportive inner monologue (story). Time is not a barrier; we make it for what we deem important. Once we realise the immense value of opening our minds up to lifelong learning, the floodgates can open and we can begin to lean into our full human potential. I spend a lot of my time helping others to see where their blind spots are as we don’t know what we don’t know, and once they understand that they are the ones getting in their own way and that it no one else’s responsibility or fault, they get busy getting after it and the floodgates open. It’s definitely a competitive advantage to be sure.
