How to Negotiate Like a Woman: Embracing Authenticity and Strategy
As an executive coach for women in tech leadership, one of the most crucial skills I emphasize is negotiation. Many women struggle with asserting themselves at the bargaining table, whether it's for a new job offer, a promotion, or simply asking for what they want and deserve. However, the truth is that women can be exceptional negotiators by tapping into their natural strengths and adopting specific strategies. Allow me to illustrate with a personal story.
The Challenge: Negotiating Under Pressure
It was November 2010, and I was a mother of four, with twin babies just five months old. My family was in the midst of a cross-country move to Denver, Colorado, and I had given myself an ambitious goal: find and secure a rental house within five days of arriving in the city. This house had to meet very specific criteria—it needed to be in a particular neighborhood close to daycare and schools, and it absolutely had to have air conditioning (a must for those hot Colorado summers).
It was November, and the rental market was sparse. Those houses that were available were either too small, outdated, or lacked the necessary amenities.
As the week progressed, my initial optimism turned to desperation. I hadn't secured a house, and I felt hopeless.
The Turning Point: Meeting a Helpful Stranger
A chance meeting changed everything for me. I was trying to broaden my social circle and meet new people when I came across a friendly local resident. I explained my situation to him and he took it upon himself to search on Craigslist. To my surprise, he found the perfect property - a beautiful, spacious house in an ideal neighborhood. The only problem was that it was beyond my budget, with the rent being 25% higher than what I could afford.
Initially, I was ready to give up on the idea of renting the house, but the kind stranger suggested that I should at least see it and negotiate the rent. At first, I thought it was a ridiculous idea. How could I possibly negotiate for a house that was so expensive? Even my husband was taken aback by the suggestion. However, I knew I had to try as I was desperate for a new home.
The Negotiation: Strategy and Authenticity
So, I brought in a local realtor for credibility, put on my biggest smile, and greeted the homeowner with warmth and enthusiasm. I complimented him on the beautiful property—and indeed, it was even lovelier than I had imagined. Then, I stated my truth plainly: "I love your house, and I want to rent it. But I cannot pay above my budget."
To my surprise, instead of an outright rejection, the owner said he would consult with his wife. When he returned, we arrived at a compromise: he agreed to my maximum budget for the first six months, after which the rent would increase by 10%. It was a win-win solution, and just like that, I had secured my dream home.
Lessons Learned: The Power of Authentic Negotiation
Securing that rental against the odds taught me invaluable lessons about negotiation:
Show Up and Show Interest: Often, we count ourselves out of negotiations before they even begin, especially when the stakes seem beyond our reach. Showing up and expressing genuine interest can open doors to negotiations that might seem impossible at first.
Be Honest and Pleasant: Honesty about your limitations, accompanied by a pleasant demeanor, can make a significant impact. People are more willing to negotiate when they feel respected and listened to.
Bring Credibility: Having a third party like a realtor can add credibility to your negotiations. It shows seriousness and professionalism, making the other party more likely to consider your offer.
Be Prepared for Compromise: Successful negotiation often involves compromise. Be prepared to meet halfway, as this can lead to favorable outcomes that benefit all parties involved.
Embrace Your Unique Approach: As women, our approach to negotiation does not have to conform to aggressive stereotypes. Embracing authenticity and integrating personal values into negotiation strategies can yield surprising results.
And finally, don't be afraid to walk away if the deal isn't right for you. Sometimes, the best negotiation tactic is having the confidence to say "no" and pursue other opportunities.
Conclusion
As women in tech leadership, embracing our unique perspectives and values in negotiation not only sets us apart but also drives success in unexpected ways. Whether it's securing a rental house or leading a high-stakes project negotiation, the principles of authenticity, strategy, and kindness are universally effective. By integrating these elements into your negotiation tactics, you, too, can turn challenging situations into triumphant agreements.
Remember, negotiation is not just about getting what you want; it's about forging relationships and crafting solutions that work for everyone. It's about negotiating not just with strategic acumen but with integrity and genuine interaction.
