How I got 80.000 views in just few days by riding the PokemonGo wave.

How I got 80.000 views in just few days by riding the PokemonGo wave.

With this experiment I wanted to test how quickly I could drive traffic to a page by using social media and riding the wave created by Pokemon Go. I figured it wouldn't be hard to do so given the disproportionate impact Pokemon Go was having and given that I found a gap in the system very early on when the game launched.

The outcome

The result was definite success, achieving in less than 10 days and with a 0$ investment, 80.000 page views, hundreds of likes/shares/comments/reactions on Facebook.

The internet is mighty powerful.

The "need" realization

It all started soon after the game released when I realized that there wasn't a compiled list of all possible attacks each Pokemon could have. At that point the only reliable information in that regard was a source list of all possible attacks at Pokemon Go, and for each attack you could see which Pokemon knew that move. The problem was that finding all the moves of X Pokemon on that list was a nightmare.

By simply re-arranging the info one could solve this problem. That's what I did.

Solving the problem

Problem was solved by fetching data and re-arranging it (which took easily 10 hours or so and for which I used Excel mainly), and by implementing a very basic JQuery instant search box I found online.

The final result was this very easy to use tool in which you can type any pokemon and the attacks come up immediately.

With the solution finalized, I just had to market it.

Marketing my solution, driving the actual traffic

In order to drive attention to the tool, I used mainly two channels. Reddit and Facebook.

My marketing strategy was to create an article with some truly helpful and high quality tips on how to Play Pokemon Go to the highest level, one of which being to use my tool to check all attacks for each one of your Pokemons. Here I played with advantage as I am interested in Geo location based games and had already 2 years of experience with Niantic's "Ingress" way earlier than Pokemon Go became famous. This gave my post authority.

You can see final article I used at this link: "The Best Pokemon GO Tips and Advice"

All it took was then to join and share the article in all big Pokemon Go groups in each major city in US, Australia, New Zealand and even some other countries where the game was not yet released.

Time and time again, people loved it, shared it, and hence the 80.000 visits.

And that's how you reach 80.000 views in a matter of days by riding a temporary wave.
