How To Be Creative When Hiring

How To Be Creative When Hiring

Guess what? After you reviewed 10 resumes, phone screened 4, interviewed 3 (1 of the 3 interviewed twice) , and made an offer to 1 - the candidate took another offer. This process took 4 weeks and you need to start from scratch. Who is to blame? Not HR.. Not the staffing agency... Definitely not GlassDoor.. (well maybe GlassDoor). ITS THE PROCESS!

In my most recent LinkedIn post, Low Unemployment Hurting Employers , I mentioned that employers should break out of the traditional hiring process. I want to focus on this topic and discuss why it is important for employers to change that habits of hiring.

Let me explain to you the type of clients I work with. I work with people that develop applications, build data centers from scratch, and constantly push user-experience to the next level with innovative ideas. But these people don't seem to think that they need to be innovative in on-boarding top talent for their teams.

Do you want advice on how to increase efficiency in hiring top talent while cutting the time it takes in half? I will share with you a few ways to improve the hiring process.

Take Hiring Seriously

Look, I get it... You don't have time to interview too busy. In other words, hiring someone isn't important to you. If so, that's fine. But if it is important, you better make sure you commit the appropriate time to make it a top priority.

Don't leave me hanging bro

I just don't understand what I did wrong..

"I went through two rounds of interviewing and thought I crushed it, but never heard back from the manager." So why did Johnny never hear back if he got the job or not? most likely because someone else did. This happens too often. In the short-run it may not seem like a big deal. However, in the long-run it could effect the brand of your organization.

As the middle man, this is one thing that I see often. Candidates that turn down an opportunity due to this specific case because it left a sour taste in their mouth. So be sure to let all applicants (or staffing agency) know if they are not moving forward with them.

Trust your Staffing Professional

It is important to development a strong relationship with a Staffing Professional. As a staffing professional, my role is to make the interview process as simple as possible. Hiring managers need to let go sometimes and trust the professionals to do the work. Obviously it takes time to build trust. We are the SME’s of consulting and staffing. We know the market trends and live through the ups and downs of unemployment.

Buy-in to the concept of a working interview (Refer to below) or utilizing the concept of speed dating as an interview process. This makes interviewing fun, but most importantly IT WORKS!

A working interview is a very easy concept to understand. It's an interview that consists of putting the candidate to work for a few hours. This is a very popular way of hiring for a help desk / desktop support position.
