Housing back on the table in Federal Parliament again this week.

Housing back on the table in Federal Parliament again this week.

“We shouldn’t axe the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF), as some parties have proposed— we should quadruple it!”

As we know, the federal government will reintroduce its Help to Buy bill to parliament again this week, readying an election trigger if the Senate blocks it for the second time.

For me, though, the focus should be on further negotiations. If the Greens want to effectively use their block in the Senate to deliver even more social and affordable homes, they should seriously consider throwing the HAFF on the negotiating table.

The private sector, non-profit housing sector, local government, state government, and alternative finance are already showing strong signs of collaboration through this model in round one.

A total of 13,742 social and affordable homes were announced, with a strong pipeline is going into round two.

State & Territory breakdowns for Round One are as follows:

  • VIC - 4,135
  • NSW - 3,266
  • WA - 2,787
  • QLD - 1,315
  • SA - 893
  • ACT - 757
  • TAS - 479
  • NT - 110

Let the $10 billion fund grow to $40 billion. For those unaware, it's a subset of the 'Future Fund,' which is already a $272 billion fund (as of December 2023).

For those, like the Greens, who say we need more capital grants going into housing, we can do that, too. There's no reason why it needs to be an either-or, and the Feds have already set up a vehicle in the Social Housing Accelerator that could be topped up to achieve that.

Let’s get back around the table this week and hammer out an even more ambitious deal on housing that everyone can be proud of. The federal election will be here before we know it.
