HMG CIO Summit of the Americas

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending the HMG Strategy CIO Summit of the Americas event at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. Having attended many CIO events in the past I found this one to be uniquely engaging as the speakers and panelists were CIO's sharing their stories and experiences. The theme of the conference was about leadership and leveraging technology to gain business advantage. There were several discussions on how CIO's earned and maintained the right to be in the board room and how they leveraged their position not just to keep the "plumbing working" but to use technology as a revenue generation tool.

One of the common themes that was raised several times at the event was every CIO should manage their function as a business. Internal customers have a choice where to get their IT services from and the should want to get them from the internal IT. The only way the IT organization can gain that level of trust and respect is to earn it through exceptional value for service.

Breakout sessions on new technology from Silicon Valley, Innovation, Laying the foundation for a digital road map and even CIO personal branding were extremely intimate, interactive and valuable.

Finally, due to the high quality of the event the networking during and after proved to be more valuable than most as the caliber of people attending the event was extremely high.

I recommend CIO's, aspiring CIO's and IT leaders look into this event to learn more about their personal and career development; meet peers and develop relationships to help grow their knowledge, skills and network.
