Have You Ever Listened Back to a Recording of Yourself Speaking?

"What? I Never Thought I Sounded That Bad!"

Have you ever listened back to a recording of yourself speaking and thought, "What? I never thought I sounded that bad!"? You're not alone. Many of us have experienced that cringe-worthy moment when we hear our own voices played back to us.

It's a powerful reminder of how others perceive us and the impact of our vocal habits.

The Reality Check

When you hear your voice recorded, you may notice things you don't when you're speaking. This includes bad voice habits like:

- Monotone delivery

- High-pitched or nasal sounds

- Filler words like "um" and "uh"

- Speaking too fast

- Vocal fry

Why It Matters

Your voice is a crucial part of your personal brand. Not having an audibly attractive voice can make you seem less trustworthy and decrease your credibility.

You only have a few seconds when you start speaking before people start making judgments about you based on how your voice sounds.

My Personal Experience

Take Anna, one of my clients. She used filler sounds like "um" and "uh" frequently, and every time she started a sentence, it began with "uh."

Anna was afraid of being silent and nervously filled that silence with filler sounds instead of just pausing. We worked a lot on having the courage to be quiet and own the silence.

Anna started recording herself and monitoring when she used filler sounds. She realized that when she was articulating a thought in her head, she would fill the silence with "uh."

To help break this habit, I assigned her an accountability partner who would remind her every time she used a filler sound. This consistent feedback helped her become more aware and, over time, stop using filler sounds.

After a month, Anna's awareness and practice paid off, and she significantly reduced her filler sounds. Her voice became warm and pleasant to listen to, no longer distracting from her content delivery.

Your First Assignment

The first step to becoming a more charismatic communicator is to know how you sound. Record yourself speaking and use this checklist to monitor how you sound:

Take Action

Bad voice habits are the fastest way to lose credibility, but they're also relatively easy to stop. Everyone has them, but few do something about it. It's time to change that.
