Get seen in your job search
When I was eight, I thought that it would be so cool to have the power to make yourself invisible!
You, too?
🦸🏻Sneaking around the house to get another cookie, even after dessert.
🦸🏻Scaring your brother by tapping them on the shoulder, them looking around and not seeing anyone there!
🦸🏻Staying up past your bedtime and not getting caught.
But then I grew up and I realized that it actually feels better to be seen.
And this is sooo critical for job searching in today’s market.
No one can give you an offer letter if they don’t know you exist.
And this just in: Applying online isn’t enough to get visible, especially when a hundred other candidates just did the same.
That’s why today we’re talking about: The Old Way of Job Searching versus the New Way!
Let’s face it.
The way to job search modeled by our parents or taught to us in the career center is SUPER passive.
Wait for a role to be posted, dust off your resume, apply to the role and then wait.
And if you get a rejection email back, at least it beats getting ghosted.
I’ve seen too many clients that bought into the idea that your application does the work for you🚫
As a former recruiter, I can tell you that applications get you into the system but they don’t get you seen.
And you have to be seen to be chosen for an interview.
You: “Fine, Emily. But how in the world am I supposed to get seen in my job search?”
Me: “Good question!”
Check this out:
🌱Update (or create) your Linkedin Profile and make sure it showcases your skills
🌱Research folks in your dream org
🌱Make a connection with those key decision makers so that you will be top of mind for a role (maybe one that’s not even advertised!)
You see the difference?
Old way: Waiting for someone else to make the move.
New way: Taking charge of your own career path!
This is exactly what my students inside our signature Happily Hired job searching programs do once they get to the networking module.
Students like Jenna go from applying – to landing immediate interviews (while others are twiddling their thumbs patiently waiting!).
Are you taking charge of your own career path?
If you want to learn more, I encourage you to check out my friends over at Clarity on Fire -- they have an epic podcast - and recently they got me to spill out what top candidates do to set themselves apart so they can job search with more ease! We also tackle:
- What’s really happening behind the scenes when you apply for a job you found online,
- How to completely avoid throwing your application into a black hole, never to be seen again,
- How to get people to notice you — and get hired for jobs that previously ignored you, or jobs that don’t even exist,
- What to do if you’re worried about gaps on your resumé, changing industries, or being too young/too old for a job,
- And how you can find a job with WAY less work than you’re used to with traditional job searching.
