Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone To Find A Great Job And Beat Unemployment Faster
Job searching in your comfort zone just doesn't work well when you're unemployed in a competitive job market ...
... Because you're not used to searching when you're at a disadvantage. You're used to searching in a good job market when you've been currently employed and there are candidate shortages.
Maybe you've always been recruited away from past employers, or you've been at your last job for a long time and realize that effective job search strategies are very different than the last time you searched for a job.
What used to work in your last job search isn't enough to overcome the massive competition you face today. Employers expect 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot, as 80M+ job seekers compete for 8.2M jobs at the same time hiring is slowing.
But it's tough to get out of your comfort zone when you've been taught resume/job search strategies that mirror the very actions that stall your job search when you face many qualified competitors. That's right, outplacement, most career coaches and authors teach strategies and professional resume writers use strategies that keep you in your comfort zone, delaying your job search.
Here are a few ways to start getting out of your job search comfort zone:
Don't Settle For A Resume That Describes You As Qualified: It's not enough in a highly competitive job market. Almost all resumes focus employers on qualifications/responsibilities/experience/job descriptions/tasks ... which makes them look average, so yours does too (even if you don't realize it). By focusing your reader on impact, you prove success (rather than forcing your reader to guess), helping you rise above the pack.
Stop Applying Online: For most positions posted online, the hiring manager has already decided who they want to hire (or even made an offer). They use job boards to show compliance with employment laws - sometimes after the fact. Job boards are also used to find comparison candidates that will support their top choices giving interviews intended to find reasons to reject you, or develop a pipeline of candidates who might be hired when the employer can hire again ... next year or whenever that might be. These types of interviews, which aren't intended to find the candidate who gets hired, make your job search take longer.
Avoid HR And Recruiters: Internal HR employees and recruiters are not your friends and they aren't trying to get you hired. Their job is to help the employer and hiring manager: Funnel all resumes into the ATS, find an exact fit for the hiring manager's needs, keep the company compliant with hiring laws and keep candidates far away from the hiring manager. External recruiters are only interested in you if you're an exact fit for their client's needs. However, HR, internal and external recruiters great at being a really nice roadblock to your job search.
Make Your Networking More Effective: Random networking through your contacts, LinkedIn, networking groups, and industry associations aren't targeted or scaled enough to work well during highly competitive job markets. To make your job search faster when you're unemployed, you need to get out of your comfort zone, change your networking process to make it more effective, while growing your network contacts in a focused, targeted way.
