Generative AI - The Basics for Content
Like many, until recently, I had a limited understanding of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). I understood basic concepts, but even those I did not fully grok. Two years ago, I decided to educate myself more about this area. Today, I want to help others in my industry understand how AI will impact us and what it means for business. On my latest Podcast, I sat down with two experts who work with generative AI, Megan Gilhooly and Rob Sylvester from Reltio.
I began by asking them to define the core concepts:
"People often interchangeably use the terms Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning…they are different." – Rob Sylvester
What is generative AI?
"There's two major kinds of machine learning out there: One is a generative model, and one is discriminating." Rob Sylvester
We also answered what natural language processing (NLP) is:
"Anytime a computer is doing anything with text data or language data…all that umbrella term boils up into NLP…anything about those computational linguistics." Rob Sylvester
And how about large language models (LLM's)?
"Fundamentally, all it is, just a model that tries to learn which words appear around other words…" Rob Sylvester
Where does deep learning fit into the picture? "a tool within machine learning…what it means is a machine learning model that is built using deep neural networks…" Rob Sylvester
Of course, we provide more detail around these definitions with actual examples before turning to the impact of generative AI on the business and customer.
Why is this important? "This isn't Amazon, we are not that big of company," Megan Gilhooly explains when explaining how Reltio leverages generative AI.
But how do you start? "Ask: What are you using this AI for...Bring the right people to the table…think through the user flow…come up with a purpose for your AI…keep it slim at first…find one use case." Megan Gilhooly.
Where do you start?
"We started with our doc portal…[because it] answers questions that customers have, so it was a natural starting point." Megan Gilhooly.
After clarifying the basics, we discuss pitfalls to avoid while using AI and specific realistic and actionable use cases.
