The Future of Health is Together
That's why we've asked a bunch of our friends (and strangers on the internet...) to share their thoughts on what's coming next. We will be sharing their stories every Friday, using the #futurehealthfriday here, on Antwan Williams' Linkedin Articles, and @advancementleague on instagram. Share your voice: http://www.advancementleague.org/futurehealthfriday.html
Jason Washington join us today, current UCF MHA student, former Florida Hospital (Advent Health) intern, incoming Administrative Fellow at HCA Healthcare in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
What are your predictions for the future of health and healthcare?
If I had to make a bold prediction, it’s that hospitals will be forced to downsize, nursing homes will be obsolete and our entire industry is going to be focused on preventative care. All of this of course won’t be for some time, but with growing healthcare technology, care is going to be delivered in the most convenient way possible.
Why did you choose your career path?
To be honest, because healthcare is a big beautiful MESS!
We’ll always need healthcare and our society demands better from us. But our system is so fragmented I’m actually attracted to it. Because I want to be apart of the change that’s going to make healthcare work efficiently in this country. There’s so much to do and so much to still be discovered, I liken it to the next “great frontier”.
What are your professional goals?
I can name positions such as COO and CEO but my honest desire is wherever I can carry the greatest influence in my organization and bring about the most effective change for our patients. As a current student, I know It’s not enough to just learn how process work currently, but to also consider how to improve them.
What is the best advice you give?
Be faithful with the little and God will give you much!
Who are your mentors and/or people you follow?
I’m currently seeking professional mentors but one of my professors, Shannon Elswick has already impacted my life and has helped me grow professionally. I owe my success to anyone who has invested real time out of their life to add value to mine. Its people like him who help drive me.
What are the biggest challenges you see in healthcare?
Cost and Information asymmetry. Right now most of the patients in our system are a part of the baby boomers and generation x. However, as more millennials enter the HC system I think we’re going to see patients being wiser and more informed about their HC choices. We’re the generation that is tech savvy and isn’t going to settle for the high cost of healthcare. Technology in healthcare is going to bring about more price transparency and our generation is going to demand better options for their care. The system that we know it today is going to be forced to change because consumers will demand better and will have the proper resources at their disposal.
What are the tech tools you can’t live without (apps, products, etc)?
Definitely my phone and my podcast
