Everyone Needs Mentors (Even You)

Everyone Needs Mentors (Even You)

Client: I need to identify some new mentors for myself.

This client is a big law partner (practicing for 16+ years).

She has a very profitable book of business. She manages her own team. She is - frankly - killing it.

Despite all of her success to date, she was looking for new mentors. Something that might surprise many people.

We often think that you need mentors when younger and that the correct role as you get older is to be a mentor. This is wrong.

Although yes, you do need/want mentors during those early years. And also yes, it's important to serve as a mentor to others as much as you can (for many reasons that - spoiler - I go into in tomorrow's Life & Law Podcast, so be on the lookout).

But the truth is that you need mentors regardless of how long you've practiced or how successful you've been.

Because no matter what level you are at, there will always be a need for support from people who:

  • Inspire you to do - and be - better.
  • Have wisdom and knowledge you want (and need).
  • You trust to ask tough questions.
  • Will coach you to come up with better answers for yourself and your career.
  • Are there to support - and sponsor - you.

Everyone needs mentors, no matter what stage you’re in.

Be sure you have the mentors you want and need within your career + life.

XO,

Heather

P.S. That doesn't mean you don't also need PEER support too (something many lawyers say they lack). Which is why I run a mastermind for attorneys who are looking for expert AND peer support to help you build a profitable, values-based law practice

That is exactly what ELEVATE Business Development Mastermind was designed for. Inside of ELEVATE you'll:

  • Get expert guidance from a trained coach and attorney who has been in your shoes.
  • Receive customized feedback and strategies based on your values, needs and personality.
  • Have peer support from attorneys you trust who are on a similar journey as you.

Find out more about how ELEVATE can help you (and see all the testimonials from past members) here.

I think a false premise that so many attorneys / humans believe is that mentoring is only supposed to be older/younger, mentor/mentee - but the mentor should always just "know" everything. So not true. Everyone needs a mentor regardless of age - and even younger attorneys can mentor older attorneys - so much wisdom untapped but that can change. Glad you are speaking to this issue on your podcast Heather - can't wait to listen!

That’s very cool! It sounds like this partner embodies a growth mindset and realizes there is no ceiling to our potential.
