E.S.G. Idle Reduction Leadership is Like Unicorns; Rare and Attractive

It is GoGreen Communications Inc.'s position that environmental, social, and governance leadership (E.S.G.) and heavy idling are diametrically opposed or direct opposites. One should not exist with the other. The chief reason we’ve taken this stance (and there are several reasons) is because of how the public will interpret what they see (remember, perception is reality).

Often, the public has no idea that the fleet-operating organization may have an E.S.G. initiative elsewhere in its operations. All the public sees are thousands of idling trucks with XXXX’s logo near the tailpipe. Idling for zero mileage, and zero benefit (usually), while creating tons of carbon and poor air quality (always).

This is a costly outcome on several levels in terms of addressing climate change. The first is the sheer intensity of carbon emissions from idling when parked. In the U.S. alone, it's estimated that this habit costs at least 40 million tons of CO2 from 8 billion gallons a year spent on idling.

Poor air quality, often in the most vulnerable neighbourhoods is a whole other costly outcome. However, perhaps the greatest cost of all in terms of climate leadership is the missed opportunity to demonstrate idle reduction cultural leadership, and Bonafede E.S.G. cost reductions for the organization.

The missed opportunity would be the optics the public would have; regarding the fleet as clean air, carbon and cost reduction heroes, and examples of how to operate 21st-century fossil-fueled engines. The public and the media would pick up and act on the example. Positive public participation in cultivating its own better air quality, carbon and cost savings is the biggest prize. With the public on board, it becomes an idle reduction movement at scale. We’ve experienced this outcome with our program in Canada.

As mentioned, reducing carbon and exhaust pollution across a large fleet business/community footprint also has its benefits in terms of attracting significant earned media exposure (like flies to honey!). The media loves genuine carbon reduction, and pollution reduction stories because those stories are like finding a unicorn. They’re rare and attract a lot of attention. Reporters are tired of the in-authentic ‘spin’ around E.S.G.

So now, imagine 1000 trucks ‘certified idle reduction leaders’ as rolling billboards for true fleet sustainability culture. Imagine if these trucks had drivers who had taken a program on their devices which had engaged their hearts and minds like no program before.

The outcome was now yielding a greater than 50% reduction in idling behavior and relative cost reductions in these areas:

*Fuel.

*Added maintenance, compromised warranties.

*Lifecycle costs.

*Vehicle downtime.

*Employee productivity.

*Carbon emissions.

*Air quality.

*Employee vehicle cost savings.

*Safety risk (vacant vehicle idling).

*Fleet reputation.

It doesn’t get any greener than going ‘idle free when parked and it makes sense'.
