Equitable Mobility Hinges on Autonomous Vehicles

Equitable Mobility Hinges On Autonomous Vehicles

In the ever-evolving landscape of transportation, the movement of both people and goods across America stands at a crossroads. As we find ourselves in the position of negotiating safe transportation options for our elders and our children, there’s a growing concern over the shrinking commercial drivers' pool, which threatens the seamless flow of freight and goods. Amidst these pressing concerns, self-driving vehicles emerge as a beacon of hope. This technology promises not only to bridge the gap in transportation accessibility but also to revolutionize the very fabric of mobility.

At a time when urban, suburban, and rural communities share a clearly defined need for alternate and equitable transportation solutions, there is a rise in dissonant voices from skeptics who doubt the feasibility and safety of self-driving vehicles. As we confront the urgent need for innovative mobility, it's disheartening to witness the growing roadblocks to the best possible outcomes.

A collective push toward a common goal

Now is the time to “row” in the same direction. We know that Autonomous Vehicles have the potential to transform the lives of those with limited mobility options, or those who aren’t able-bodied and rely on professional drivers to move around. We are faced with an opportunity to unite efforts and develop a framework that increases public confidence and regulatory trust in this groundbreaking technology. By doing so, we can ensure that the benefits of AVs are extended to marginalized members of society.

The solution? The automotive industry must come together to find commonality in the non-differential hardware and software that makes up Autonomous Vehicles. Only this way can we achieve the necessary technological advancements while ensuring safety and security. Enter AVCC: a global autonomous vehicle (AV) consortium that specifies and benchmarks solutions for AV computing, cybersecurity, functional safety, and building block interconnects.

Cooperation is the only path to AV success

By fostering an environment of cooperation and knowledge-sharing, AVCC aims to overcome the challenges that are currently hindering the progress of self-driving vehicles. These include lowering the IP cost, minimizing package dimensions, decreasing system power consumption, and more. Industry collaboration will help pool resources and increase the volume of these non-differentiated technologies that are needed for mass market adoption.

Let’s not dwell on the negative cacophony and instead strive for commonality to reach a solution. Join us at AVCC.
