The end of a long Uber ride
When I accepted a friend’s offer to come and meet a couple of people from Uber in my first year of university, I did so out of pure love for a product that I thought was magic. I had recently moved from a very small country town, and before being told about Uber I had worried about how I’d get around safely at night. So, when given the chance, I had to meet the people who had given me a sense of freedom in this new, big city.
I was lucky that day to meet Mike Abbott and Tenielle Stoltenkamp. I was lucky because I got to meet two of the many incredible people I’d come to know and be fortunate to learn from at Uber. I was lucky because that interaction would be the start of almost 6 (!) years full of adventure and growth that would define the first half of my twenties. I feel like I’ve grown up at Uber.
I started at Uber without a passport, and leave having been to SF, Singapore, Bangkok, Hyderabad, Amsterdam and Seoul and with those travels having made an amazing cohort of international friends. I leave Uber still without a driver’s licence, but that’s ok because we all know I’m pretty hooked at this point.
I’m immensely passionate about the work I’ve been doing with Sunhae, Shiro, Tom & Audrius this year in Korea & Japan, and wouldn’t leave that behind if it weren’t for an opportunity I’m really stoked about.
And so, in a couple of short weeks I’m super excited to be joining Square Peg Capital's investment team.
I really believe that interviews should be a two way street: you should be assessing an employer as much as they’re assessing you. The team at Square Peg made me feel so welcome throughout; they were kind, passionate and genuinely interested in my journey and my perspective. Much like many of the people I've worked with at Uber. It gave me a sense of how their founders must feel: supported. I think their awesome portfolio is a testament to this.
Thank you to all of the people who have supported, backed and taken a bet on this country kid at Uber. I know there will be a lot of founders who come out of the alumni group (there already are!), and I hope that at some point in my new adventure at Square Peg I’ll get to see some of your faces again.
Up and to the Right,
Casey
