Empower Yourself, and Discover Your Path!
Greetings,
Think recovery month is just about rehab and AA meetings? Think again. September is a time for reflection, a chance to redefine what recovery means to you.
Like everything in my world, I like to take it a step further, like the raw, real conversations on BreakFearFindFreedom. This may or may not resonate with you, and that doesn’t matter either. After all, if it does, you’ll see it for what it is. If it doesn’t, you’ll stop reading and continue scrolling, and that’s okay too.
The first step in this process is to remember that no matter where we are on our journey, it’s ours and ours alone. Of course, we’re never truly alone. There are resources out there, and coaches like me, who will hold your hand and support you along the way if that’s how you want to navigate this path.
When we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, we can see that this isn’t just about substance abuse. It goes much deeper than that, into the addiction to toxic relationships, people, or situations. And then there are the addictions to our toxic thoughts. Again, this isn’t a judgment, just an observation. Each of these deserves its conversation.
The point of this conversation is to have the bravery to prioritize yourself in these situations and understand that recovering from one thing can affect your recovery from everything, one step at a time.
Let me explain what I mean by this statement. One thing rings true about all the stories from all the conversations I’ve had with people who are in recovery. The point when you say, “Enough is enough.“ It’s only at this moment that we can decide for ourselves and enter the recovery phase.
Sometimes, the path is slippery, and we relapse for a moment. That’s okay. This is probably one of the best moments within this phase because it’s here where you can be honest with yourself and learn to love yourself a little more. Where we begin to accept and embrace the self-criticism, and self-judgment dragon within us. This is a beautiful thing, and it’s also a time to remember that it’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay to slip backward because this is where you can cement your path a little more.
Does this make sense?
Sometimes, when we say “enough is enough,“ we sit with that decision and find we can’t move forward with it no matter what we do. These circumstances might be murky, as our self-doubt rears its ugly head. Where the biggest thing is the fear of change. The fear is so intense and the self-doubt so real that changing the status quo seems impossible. The freedom from these chains is a dim vision.
We can convince ourselves of anything we like. We are that powerful. Our minds are machines we can use for our good or our detriment. And of course, our minds are there to protect us anyway, protect us from so-called failure or disappointment. Sometimes, when we’re in this murky stage of addiction, no matter what it is for us, our mind can convince us that this is okay, that it’s not that bad after all.
Have you found yourself in a situation like this?
What did you do?
This is a critical moment in your journey. Even if it doesn’t feel like it now, help is within reach. Take a step back and recognize the potential for despair. This path can be dangerous, leading to feelings of hopelessness and isolation.
But there’s also a chance for change. You might experience a breakthrough, a moment of clarity where you see your true value. Remember, you’re not alone. This moment of clarity might be brief, so be ready to grasp it.
You have a choice: continue on this path or choose a new direction. It’s about deciding now. Choose recovery, choose life, choose yourself. It might be hard to understand this while caught in the cycle of blame and shame, but external support can be crucial. Knowing you’re not alone and that others are there to support you can make a difference.

2moI agree, Carina! Rehab and peer support meetings are integral components of a strong personal program of recovery but they are only part of the story.
