Doin' it Right Highlight: Buxton Hollow Farm
Don't laugh, but I believe that we’re all unique snowflakes.
I don’t mean that in the weird politically demeaning way, but rather that we’re all unique. We have so many tiny and distinct differences that there is no perfect answer for what any person needs - medicinal or otherwise. We all have our quirks, the nitty-gritty minutea and preferences for one product or approach versus another, where even identical twins become wholly different people with specific needs.
It is for this reason that I am such a big believer in precision medicine. There is no one “best” product or service - there’s ones that are right for you and your needs and it’s not necessarily the answer for someone else.
It’s a core belief in my own approach to customer service and making product recommendations to both businesses and individuals alike.
Here’s an example of applying it within the cannabis space: Do you need a CBD lotion that works great? What strength level do you need / how severe is the pain? Based on what you describe, you might be recommended an isolate or maybe broad spectrum compound with specific other cannabinoids in there too. Maybe you want it to be organic or you have allergies to avoid. Maybe you’d prefer it to be a local company or one that is veteran owned. Do you have a preference for lotion type - a bar, a balm, a cream, a liquid, a roll-on, a spray? What’s your budget for this? Depending on all of those answers and specifics, the field of 10,000 CBD lotion providers can be narrowed down to just a handful of options.
Medicine can - and should! - be personalized, it just takes a little bit of effort and getting to know a customer… And the results of having something customized for your specific needs will guarantee a better result.
In fact, the same thing can be said for the creation of these cannabis products - from the very beginning; from germination of that first plant. This critical starting point is where the Demers family over at Buxton Hollow Farm comes in to offer its assistance. They have far more than just a list of agricultural amendments and composts to customers - they offer a tailored experience for you and your cultivation setup.
They’re local to me, a New England company that’s family owned and operated. That alone is important as more and more of the agricultural field is being dominated by big players… But most critically - how the BHF team operates is what turned me into a fanboy of their work: They’ll spend the time to talk with their customers about their specific needs and accompany decades of experience with soil analytics. They use scientific tools to understand the situation and from there, they recommend and create sustainable and organic custom blends - down to little differences in each plot or row of crops!
They provide high-quality products for more than just big farms, but also landscapers, homeowners, and small-time home cultivators like myself.
There’s no need to get sold on X-brand of nutrients from a gardening store - no guesswork about whether to use blood meal or feather meal or soybean meal, and no question that you’re getting the very best recommendation for your specific situation. Seriously: Just for potash alone, it can be hard to decide between azomite, langbeinite, sulfate of potash, greensand, specific types of kelp meal, wood ashes, maybe a granite dust, or perhaps a more all-around additive is better in your unique situation… Let the soil scientists on the BHF team figure it out for you.
Whether it’s making a choice on a cannabis product or amending a field in the spring (or basically almost anything in life), figuring out problems by yourself is hard… Even if you’re extremely experienced, being close to problems can sometimes leave us blinded by what we have in front of us. We get so wrapped up in what we’re doing that having an outside hand can be like a breath of fresh air.
It’s a great idea to bring in outside help - even just to look at what you’re doing - because you may have missed something critical. Maybe an outside expert will have options to offer that you have not considered or do not have access to - maybe they’ll be able to provide something crucial that you didn’t even know you needed.
In this case, if you’re a New Englander with an organic green thumb or cultivation business, I know you’ll be impressed with what the Buxton Hollow Farm has to offer you. There’s always more to learn and see when it comes to cultivation - even with 18th century sustainable farming traditions. Give them a call and I can almost guarantee that they’ll have something to offer that will make a huge difference in your next crop.
...
I should note here that the Buxton Hollow Farm team did not ask me to write this piece nor am I being compensated by them in any way. Yes, really. They’re just rad and I love to recommend excellent local businesses whenever I can - especially when they demonstrate the levels of customer service and quality that I want to see in the world.
If I can show them off and it just so happens to help illustrate my point about personalized recommendations, outsider eyes looking in, and bespoke experiences creating some of the happiest and most loyal customer base, then so be it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
