Dealing With Imposter Syndrome

Dealing With Imposter Syndrome

80% of my 1:1 coaching clients are women over 40. Many of them have similar traits; smart, successful and yet they struggle with imposter syndrome - that feeling that despite what they have achieved, they're not good enough.

This can occur due to a toxic work environment or a terrible boss. Sometimes divorce occurs or the kids have left home and your world is turned upside down.

Life throws things at us that knock us off balance.

There are ways to overcome this. The speed at which you do this involves variable factors. Are you an introvert or extrovert? and How much do you procrastinate?

1. Nobody is judging you as much as you're judging yourself.

When I started YouTube, I freaked out at the size of my big bald head, my big nose and my big ears. Nobody engaged with my posts. Ironically when I overcame my fear and started doing video properly in 2021 on LinkedIn, it became my biggest source of leads and remains where most of my business enquiries come from.

my first videos on Youtube. I was so nervous I couldn't smile properly

2. Success lies on the other side of fear

I don't just mean financial success. I mean internal success and fulfillment. When you try new things, it's scary at first and never as bad as you thought. When I first started speaking, my legs wobbled, I spoke too fast and through daily practice and facing fear, I completed my first TED talk and now speak internationally every few months.

3. Ask For Help

When you have problems, there's never any shame in asking for help. It's what smart people do.

You rarely achieve anything alone. I released Everybody Works In Sales in 2018 and it still sells 40-50 copies a month. I know this isn’t a Sunday Times bestseller, but 40-50 copies/month for a self-published book is amazing. An editor, a designer, marketer, bloggers and friends helped me sell it. It's always easier moving forward with the support of other people

4. It's All About Your Mindset and Attitude

How you show up and deal with things plays a massive part in dealing with fear. A vision board helps keep you centred and focused. You can read about vision boards here https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:ugcPost:7016752565941850112/

It's okay to be scared. It's not okay to do anything about it.
