I have been fortunate in my life to have the honour to share the stage with many notable leaders who challenged me to inspire their people to work at their best. The story was told in business results - fastest growing company on the Profit 500, acquired for 10x forward EBITDA, annual growth rate of 40%, acquisition and integration strategies to form the world's leading supplier, or the successful turnaround of a third generation business - but the real headline is People.
Leadership is a journey and along the way we invite others on the road to share our experience. You cannot lead from someone else's experience. To be genuine it has to be your own. As a leader you have to know yourself. Know the beliefs that you stand for, what you want to say and how you are going to say it. Leadership is about purpose and the awareness to create conversations that encourage other people to share our journey. Success comes when people feel included, when they know their voice matters, when they are empowered.
My work has taken me across the world and I have seen firsthand that leadership is a human experience. The best at it focus on what others need. Great leaders worry less about the position they hold and more about helping people achieve positive, lasting change. They focus on the clearest path to positive outcomes. As leaders we have the chance to reignite creativity, innovation, and learn. We need to create spaces where trust lives and fuels honest conversations. Where we and others can dare greatly.
