DAN'S WINE BLOG- THIS WEEK'S WINE REVIEW

THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW:

Friday, July 14, 2023: Hands up those of you that have heard of CINSAUT? (Some write it as Cinsault with the L.) I bet it ain’t many! Those of you (like me) who are big fans of Morris of Rutherglen Wines (Durif masters extraordinaire) will/would have known it as Blue Imperial.

The very first Cinsaut I tasted was the Morris 1986 Blue Imperial in 1989 (the label suggested it was best drunk young). Well imagine my surprise and utter delight when in 2007 or was it 2008 I found a bottle tucked away in my cellar and it was stellar!! Well and truly a long-term cellaring proposition at 21-years-old.

For a long time Cinsaut was hard to find – and still not super easy today. Last year my love of Cinsaut lead me to write an article on it which appeared in the Sep/Oct 2022 edition of WBM magazine – “Cin-City” (please refer to link below).

So as you may have guessed today’s wine is a Cinsaut – it is the Yelland & Papps Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Cinsault 2022.

Over the last few years I have been constantly impressed with the sheer quality of the Yelland & Papps wines and this is no exception. What a magnificent wine!!

Medium-depth of purple/red colour with pronounced aromas of red berries/red currants, bright florals with a hint of violets and black pepper – outstanding! The palate is divine, mid-depth with lashings of lively flavours including red currants, violets and smidge of spice. The finish is smooth and long lasting.

This wine is utterly gorgeous on its own or with all but the spiciest of foods, be they meaty or vegan.

Check out this beauty and their other magnificent wines at the link below – you will not be disappointed by any of their excellent wines.

Have a great week, remember to always #chooseaustralianwine and whenever possible enjoy #emergingvarietiesCheers, Dan T.
