I run my own soft skills training franchise business in Tokyo and many years ago, I decided to dress for success. Each day I consult my schedule and that day's work content drives my satorial choices. Before I head out the door every day, I check myself in the mirror and ask, "Do I look like one of the most professional people in my industry". Here is a good question to ponder: do I dress well because I am the President or am I the President because I chose to start dressing well?
This day I had an Executive Coaching session in the morning. We are near the end of the original coaching assignment and my client told me he wanted to keep going, so always good to hear you are adding value. I had meeting with a big Japanese pharma client after a quick lunch at the Tokyo American Club Nihonbashi branch (but sadly saw no clients there). This pharma company is a new client. I met a senior executive of this firm at a business networking event and followed up, leading to the meeting. So the lesson in Japan is always follow up!
This client meeting was followed by an online meeting with the YouTube hosts of Japan Expert Insights, Tim Sullivan and Maya Matsuoka. We will record my interview episode in June. I wanted to look sharp for my Executive Coaching client and fresh and energetic for the new Japanese corporate client.
I chose my light coloured Gianni Versace Couture single breasted, double cuff suit, side vents, with Prince of Wales check which also has a subtle mauve stripe running through the suit. I could have gone for a mauve shirt and purple tie to pick up the mauve stripe in the suit, as I have done in the past. However, I decided to go for a different contrast. I matched the suit with my custom shirt in electric blue with white collar and white French Cuffs, to create a contrast between the shirt and the suit. The cufflinks matched with the light blue in the Louis Vuitton blue tie, which had a small squares pattern, my usual double Windsor knot and contrasted with the strong blue in the shirt. My Ermenegildo Zegna dark blue pocketsquare also with a squares pattern picked up the squares pattern in the tie and the darker blue in the pocketsquare provided some contrast with the light colours in the suit. My usual Cartier Tank Francaise watch with black strap and Dale Carnegie corporate badge. Finally, high shine Pollini black Oxford shoes.
