CLIMBING THE “HIERARCHY OF NEEDS” TO FIND EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow set out his “hierarchy of needs.” He theorized that human behavior is a response to needs ranging from survival and safety to belonging to self-esteem and self-actualization. When looking to keep employees engaged, the hierarchy can be informative. Fair compensation covers much of it. But helping people meet higher-level needs can be tricky. Consider ample praise, clear career paths and earned promotions. Employee engagement is important to profitability; keep an open mind about fulfilling your workers’ needs.
