Propagation is the process of reproducing plants and multiplying their numbers. In the case of cassava, propagation is typically achieved through the use of stem cuttings.

Cassava plants do not produce true seeds like many other crops, so stem cuttings are used to maintain desirable traits and ensure genetic consistency.

Cassava Propagation:

  1. Selection of Healthy Plants:Healthy and disease-free cassava plants are selected for propagation. It is essential to choose plants that exhibit desired traits such as high yield, resistance to pests and diseases, and other agronomic characteristics.

  2. Preparation of Stem Cuttings:Stem cuttings are prepared from mature, disease-free cassava plants. These cuttings typically consist of 20-30 cm long segments of the stem. Each cutting should have several nodes, as these nodes are the points from which roots and shoots will develop.

  3. Drying and Healing:The cuttings are left to dry and heal for a few hours or days, allowing the cut ends to form a protective layer. This helps reduce the risk of infections when the cuttings are planted.

  4. Planting the Cuttings:The healed stem cuttings are planted directly into the soil or in nursery beds. Planting depth should ensure that at least one or two nodes are buried in the soil. Proper spacing between cuttings is essential to allow for healthy growth.

  5. Establishment and Growth:The planted stem cuttings develop roots and shoots, giving rise to a new cassava plant. Regular care, including adequate watering and protection from pests, is provided to support the establishment and growth of the cassava plants.

  6. Harvesting and Multiplication:Once the cassava plants have matured, they can be harvested for their edible roots. Additionally, healthy stems can be selected for further propagation, continuing the cycle of multiplication.
