Can these really be your 2 best friends?

Can these really be your 2 best friends?

When you are going after a goal and not seeing results as quickly as you would like (think weight loss), your 2 best friends can be Debriefing and Tracking.

What do I mean by that?

Well, let’s stay with the weight loss analogy for a moment. If you are like me, you plan out what you will eat for the day first thing in the morning. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are all there for me inside a tracking app on my phone - then all there is to do is “follow the plan.” Simple enough right?

And I must admit, I’m tempted to stray when I see my husband eating “junk” but I stayed the course yesterday, until just before bed, when I have this overwhelming desire for chocolate!!!

No big deal...

I’ll just sneak out a few chunks of chocolate from the Moose Trax ice cream and then go to bed, but a few chunks turn into many and now there are no more chocolate chunks left and the carton looks like I was drilling for oil.

It gets worse...

Since I’ve already blown it, I grab the potato chips, (I now need salt). And it doesn’t stop there, I’m now pouring Hersey’s syrup on the chips; oh, Good Lord!!!

Talk about the Valley of Despair!

This is when I hear the words of my Weight Watcher's leader in my head saying, "OK Denise, if you got a flat tire would you pull out a knife and slash the other 3 tires as well??" And I stop and go to bed!

No big deal tomorrow is another day, “Just Shake it Off” as Taylor Swift says, and pick yourself up and start over, right? Well, here is what I’ve noticed: these slip-ups subtly start to chip away at my Emotional & Mental Stamina, and I start to doubt my likelihood of achieving my goal.

As I was committing to writing this blog on Accountability Lab this morning, I thought, "What if I used last night’s debacle and debriefed it by answering these 4 questions:"

What, in this situation worked?

  • I created a plan and stuck to it for 95% of the day
  • After 15 minutes of binge eating, I stopped

What didn’t work?

  • I had a slip-up and let it spiral out of control eating everything in sight

What did I learn from this experience?

  • I’m highly susceptible to overeating late at night (this isn’t my first rodeo)
  • Tomorrow is another day; I will start over and nobody died here

And what will I do differently?

  • Have healthy snacks planned for late-night eating

Now I want to ask this; why do you think it’s easier to hit reset and bounce back from an eating mishap but not so easy when we have a business one? I have thoughts on this but want to know - What do you think???

I love the debrief, especially looking for what worked first. I use forgiving myself when I blow it (both personally and professionally). Being kind to myself stops me from beating myself up with all the "I know better" stuff.
