Body and Mind both are key to performance
To excel in any sport, we need to be fit, not just physically but also mentally.
'Be at peace with yourself', as simple as it sounds can often be a tricky affair. It’s one thing to handle external pressure, but dealing with our own mind is a different ball game altogether.
I can recollect two situations where I experienced this intensely. The first occasion was when I was recovering from my tennis elbow injury, the thought of never being able to bat again for India constantly crept in my mind. The second was our first-round exit from the 2007 ODI World Cup. It was very tough to deal with and possibly the lowest point in my career. Not only the team’s performance, but its commitment was doubted as well.
In both these instances, I knew that I could find my way back only with focussed rehab, training and the care & support of those closest to me. The recovery and return to cricket that followed was gradual but was made possible by the positivity of the ones around me.
After all, each one of us needs support and a listening ear from time to time. The lockdown has taught us to not take anything for granted, let's be empathic to those around us and be there for each other. As we slowly begin adapting to a 'new normal', I would urge you to focus on physical as well as mental well-being, and not hesitate to seek professional help and support if required.
