The Biggest Mistake You Can Make in Your Career (And How to Avoid It)

The Biggest Mistake You Can Make in Your Career (And How to Avoid It)

Have you ever wondered if you chose the wrong career path or industry?

It's a scary thought.

You spend years of your life studying, working, and climbing the ladder, only to realize that you're unhappy, unfulfilled, or misaligned with your true purpose.

You feel stuck, frustrated, and confused.

You don't know what to do next.

You're not alone.

Many professionals struggle with this dilemma at some point in their careers.

They have a lot of considerations to weigh when choosing their career path, such as:

  • Security and stability

  • Confidence and competence

  • Freedom and flexibility

  • Satisfaction and expectations

But they often overlook the most crucial factor of all:

Their essence.

Your essence is who you really are, what you really want, and why you really matter.

It's your unique combination of talents, passions, values, and vision.

It's your assignment in life.

And if you're not obedient to your assignment, you'll never find true happiness or success in your career.

This is the steadfast mission we are to fulfill with a healthy self-identity and alignment with purpose. Obedience to our assignment is the only way we can operate at our highest level and contribute to our fullest potential for the rest of our days.

It’s how we rise to the greatness we were meant for.

But though we believe that we are seeking satisfaction or happiness in career, it isn’t that simple. What we really seek is our true calling.

We are looking to feel deep fulfillment, the feelings we know so well in some of our most vivid daydreams that we wished would never end.

The fulfillment most of us will have tasted in adulthood was often confused with other, more destructive dynamics:

  • feelings of wanting to hold on to the praise and approval from others

  • of having to suppress our biggest dreams because of responsibilities

  • of not feeling sure of ourselves.

How logical it is that we should as educated adults find ourselves rejecting our innermost desires for change not because they are wrong but because they are too unreasonable—too greedy, selfish, unachievable, or even risky.

We also make mistakes because we are so programmed to aim for security.

No one can be in an optimal frame of mind to choose one career path when we can see that the future is growing more and more uncertain with the state of current (economic) affairs.

We have to be completely at peace with the possibility of losing everything we worked so hard to gain in order to be appropriately choosy in our career. Otherwise we risk loving the guarantee of making money every month, much more than we love the work we spend so much of our lives doing.

The good news is that it’s not over if we find out that we failed to choose the right career.

Failure is a feature of the career journey.

It’s the mark of having human experiences in your life. And human experiences are the creators of your essence.

The magic formula, if there is one, is to create the experiences of life that you desire. Otherwise you run the risk of feeling that life is just an existence.

This is not to say that you’ll never get to the right career. The one that is your true calling.

With the right understanding and approach to the principles and strategies of creating inspiring work, you will.

We first need to acknowledge that there can be no end to our sense of failure or uncertainty.

But none of this is unusual or grounds for retreating back to the status quo.

Any decisions related to our career and life are merely identifying which particular variety of problems, challenges, and pain we would most like to sacrifice our comforts for.

While understanding your essence and true calling is crucial, the path to professional fulfillment requires more than just self-awareness—it demands a strategic framework for transformation.
